A s Sarah was surveying the results of her efforts, Callum and his party had just ambushed the carriage of the notorious Laird John Mackie, an arrogant and greedy man who was known for brutalizing both tenants and servants alike.

Ally’s eyes gleamed with malice as soon as he saw him. “Well, if it isnae Laird Mackie the Terrible!” he cried as he wrenched open the carriage door. The laird was a man of medium height with a handsome open face that belied the cruelty of his nature. Now he cowered back and took a bulging leather pouch from his back that jingled as he held it out to Ally.

“Take it,” he said in a trembling voice. “Just leave me alone.” He cringed back into the interior as far as he could and practically curled up into a ball.

Ally snatched the pouch from his hand and threw it to Robbie, who was waiting behind him, having tied up the carriage driver. Then he hauled the laird outside and threw him to the ground. “Ye filthy swine,” he said menacingly. “Ye got my cousin Annie wi’ child an’ she died in childbirth. Now ‘tis yer turn.'' Before anyone could stop him, Ally raised his dagger and plunged it into the laird’s heart. He died without a sound. “May the fires o’ hell take ye!” Ally cried, before spitting into the dead man’s face.

He tried to stamp away, but Callum caught him by the arm and hauled him around, keeping such a tight grip on him that Ally could not move. “Ye swore ye would no’ kill again!” he roared. “We hae been lucky so far...we hae no’ been captured...but this...” He pointed to the corpse of the laird on the ground. “They will move heaven an’ earth tae get the murderers o’ a laird!”

Realization dawned in Ally’s eyes as he glared at Callum. He had got the gang into serious trouble, but Ally’s pride would not let him back down. “Ye’re a coward, MacInnes!” he said scathingly. “A big chicken-livered nancy boy! Run away home an’ pray for yer sainted mammy!”

“Ye are not fit tae speak o’ my mammy’s name, ye wee worm!” Callum pulled the smaller man towards him and stood over him, glowering thunderously into his face. For a moment the two men held each other’s gazes, neither willing to back down, but then Callum felt a sharp, painful jab in his thigh. He looked down and saw Ally’s dagger jutting out of the pouch where he kept his own dagger.

White-hot fury seared through him as he whipped the weapon out of the pouch which had saved his life and swiped it sideways to slice the flesh of Ally’s arm almost to the bone. As the smaller man screamed in agony and clutched his arm, which was now bleeding profusely, Callum hooked his fist under Ally’s chin, lifting him off his feet. He landed on his back, and then skidded a few yards before coming to a stop in a patch of mud.
