SEVEN

FAMILIA

The inside of the Ganesha looked more like a high-class luxury condo than the flying warehouse it was designed to be. There were plush fabric-lined walls and elegant mini-chandeliers giving off flickering candle-like light, a fully-stocked wet bar with a bartender, a lavishly-furnished conversation area facing a large multi-screen on which a plethora of images constantly changed and flickered; several servants in white uniforms stood about awaiting orders. The flight was so smooth that I could hardly tell we were on a helicopter up in the demonic night air, and not on top of some skyscraper in the heart of Tenochtitlán.

It reminded me more of a place where I’d see Patiyonena lounging around rather than where the Padrino would take care of some dangerous business. Then I saw her—Patiyonena—right here in this monster flying machine! There I go with the hallucinations again—I’d be seeing Cóatliquita and Lady Tenochtitlán too, no doubt! By then it was getting lonely in the box.

But the hallucinations I was waiting for didn’t come—I realized that I was seeing Patiyonena on part of the multiscreen, then that facet faded her out and faded me in.

It was an awful picture of me that was computer-enhanced according to eyewitness descriptions that made me look like a murderous escaped lunatic. I faded out and the latest soccer highlights came on, then Patiyonena, crying like a girl left at the altar, then the lunatic version of me appeared on another facet. I guess all of Tenochtitlán knew of me and was on the lookout; I wished I could catch the audio, to find out just what they thought this was all about.

“Do you have to have that damned thing on?” said Blanca, loud and unladylike, waving both hands at the multiscreen. “It’s distracting, and besides, if I can unplug for a while for this, so can you!”

Don Gabriel gulped down the dregs of a cup of coffee, nodded, and a servant touched a remote hidden on her uniform. All the multiscreen’s facets blanked at once.

“That’s much, much better, my love.” She took one of his arms and drew a little closer to him. “Could we have some music?”

He pulled away from her, nodded to another servant who melted into the shadows, and a sappy, sentimental pop song from the turn of the century subtly filled the air. I felt like I was in an elevator.

“Ay, how romantic.” She took the initiative and took him in her arms. He pushed her away, awkwardly. He was obviously attracted to her—and why not? She had one of the best bodies that money could buy—but in typical macho fashion didn’t want her in control; also he seemed to object to her for some abstract principle that wasn’t clear yet.

She took hold of him again, digging her nails into his biceps. He tried to push her away again, paused as he realized that his hands were on her breasts, then slowly, he took hold of her throat. It was like watching the mating dance of mutant praying mantises.
