Chapter Eleven

Hannah knew she needed to leave the basement suite.

She needed to find a job. Needed money to buy herself a new car since the one she had been using was under Wesley’s name, and she was technically not supposed to be using it anymore.

It was getting harder to get out, though. Lottie was a godsend. Hannah didn’t let her do the shopping for her, but she went with her, and Lottie’s cheerful chatter helped bolster her against the looks Hannah got otherwise. As it turned out, she was either much more notorious than she realized over the past few months, or she was just extra sensitive to it when she was alone.

Maybe it wasn’t healthy to stay in this town after all.

She scrolled through the Paranormal Daddy Agency website. Bethy had told her she needed to match with five of them. She’d even pulled a few strings and gotten Hannah special permission to see the photos and bios of her potential matches. Normally, the agency would prepare some matches and give the woman limited information so as not to bias her too much.

She and Wesley had been a ‘perfect match’ with one another early on when Hannah signed up. She’d agreed to him without thinking because he had specially requested her after getting their perfect match—again, not seeing her photo—and she hadn’t thought anyone would ever request her. Now she recognized it as Mark’s voice in her head, planting doubts, but all the same.

Her cursor lingered over the photo of a bear-shifter, Alan Stokes. He had a kind face and jovial eyes. But what really drew her to him was his location; he lived in a city only an hour’s drive away from here.

Hannah shook her head, closed the website, and set her laptop aside. She stared into the flickering flames of the electric fireplace Amos had installed because the suite got kinda cold. She pulled her blanket up to her chin and sighed.

It was unfair, she thought, for the PDA to be pushing her to make new matches. Yes, she was meant to chat with them via the agency’s app rather than going to live with them at this point, but all the same. With all this drama happening with Wesley, why couldn’t they resolve the issue at hand before pushing her to match up with other potential mates?

Not that Wesley was a potential mate. Even if circumstances were different, she wouldn’t be able to give the rest of her life to Wesley. They’d agreed on that already. The main point of staying here in this town was so Hannah could learn more about her magic—something she hadn’t been able to access no matter how hard she tried—and for Elsa to have school stability. It wasn’t because of any potential she and Wesley had.

And maybe Bethy had picked up on that. Maybe this was actually because the PDA was supposed to bring people together for mates, and, in a way, both she and Wesley were taking advantage of
