Chapter 16

Sophie lazed on Josh’s naked body, fully sated, her own body still tingling. Yes, he was so good with words that it almost made her question him, but his actions said it all. That was what she needed to remember, in those dark moments when she was scared this wouldn’t work out or that she would lose everything in the process. Josh’s actions showed her what she needed to know.

He lay underneath her cheek, his arms wrapped around her, his fingers tapping on her shoulder.

Dum, dum, dum, dum, dimmity da dum dum.

Over and over again.

“What is that tune you’re tapping?” She tickled his chest.

“Something new.” He carried on tapping. “It’s just starting to come to me.” Leaning up on her elbow, she looked at him, his eyes still closed, his forehead wrinkled, the tapping not stopping. He opened his eyes and asked, “Do you have a pen and paper up here?”

“Erm, I should do.”

“Where is it? I need to write this down.”

She made a naked dash to her dressing table and riffled through the drawers. He started humming, now sitting up, the duvet covering him.

“Here.” She handed him the pad and pen, then slid back into bed to cover herself up and watched him write away.

Nodding his head and tapping his foot, he scribbled out words, drumming the pen against the pad, humming and muttering to himself.

Sophie stayed silent, watching him for a while, mesmerised by his working process and seeing the creativity flow from him to the paper. As she watched, she felt privileged to be able to see this side of Josh, his talent literally pouring out of him. This was a side that not everyone saw, not his fans, not the paps. And boy, were they missing out. Josh was lost in his work, his forehead scrunched, his beautiful voice singing soft mutterings of phrases.

“I’ll make dinner,” she whispered with a smile, kissing his head and getting dressed. Josh was so into his words he barely looked up.

She went about preparing the chicken breasts to sear and roasting the winter vegetables, while Josh made his way downstairs, still lost in his notes and humming. Who knew what he had planned for dinner, or even if he was on some sort of fad, celebrity diet. But seeing as he hadn’t looked up from the dining table once, he would have to eat what he was given. He’d apologised when he got downstairs and offered to make dinner, but she had batted him away and told him not to worry about it. She could see his fingers were still tapping out that tune, and so with a smile, she had turned him around and sent him out of her kitchen.

Her mobile phone vibrated in her back pocket. Belle. Closing the kitchen door so she didn’t disturb Josh in his flow, she answered with a whisper. “Hiya.”

“Hey. Why are you so quiet? Have I caught you at a bad time?”

“No, just don’t want to be too loud.”

She wasn’t sure why, but she didn’t want to blurt out to Belle that Josh was in the other room.
