CALLI

Will you be our Queen, Calli?

Fuck! Why did it sound so simple, and yet it threw my mind into absolute chaos every single fucking time?

How did you just decide to be a Queen? What kind of person did you need to be to think, ‘yeah, sure, on your knees, I’m Queen now?’ I’d never been that person. I didn’t know how to be. I wasn’t a natural leader. I cared for people, and I had a natural empathy that made me want to help them. But Queen? That just wasn’t in my wheelhouse.

“You don’t need to answer now,” Grey reassured me, giving me a way to back down before I did something I’d regret.

Their offer of leaving had been so tempting. Packing up and slipping away sounded like an excellent plan. But then I wondered how I’d ever be able to face the kids again. They’d all lost someone they loved to this madness. How many other children were sitting alone because some fuckwit had ripped their parents away from them?

No, we couldn’t walk away from this now. Someone needed to make a stand, and if we could get a grasp of this new magic the pack was being filled with, we could end this before anyone else had to suffer through what we had.

It had to be us, and it had to be now.

“Tomorrow, when the rest of the pack gets here, we need to start training. We need to get you all to the point where you can access and use your magic like it’s second nature. There won’t be time in a fight to centre yourself,” I said instead, a plan starting to form in my head.

Grey nodded thoughtfully. “We should add it into the training regimen. Probably in the morning, before everyone gets too tired to concentrate.”

I could see the pride in Grey’s eyes at my acceptance. I wasn’t fully there yet, but I would work on it. Maybe helping the others learn to use their magic would help me bond with them more. Hopefully, that would go some way toward me being able to accept what they were asking of me.

Just the thought alone made me want to shudder.

“Have we heard anything back about the laptop?” Grey asked Lachlan.

Tanner shuffled at our feet before he turned to sit on the ground with his back braced against our chair. He kept one hand wrapped around my calf as he made himself comfortable and settled in for what was turning into a serious planning session.

“The guy I sent it out to thinks he’ll be through the encryption in the next day or two. He was surprised at how heavy duty it was, but he’s got a program he’s been working on that he’s confident can get through the firewall,” Lachlan filled us in.

“Is that strange?” I asked. Something about this whole thing wasn’t quite adding up, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was exactly.

“Yes, actually,” Lachlan said with a nod. “A program like this isn’t one you can buy off the shelf.
