I sat at the bar of Inferno, a demon-owned club around the corner from Hell Inc, Lucifer’s looming skyscraper that grabbed the attention of everyone in the vicinity. While segregation didn’t exist in Mystic Oaks, there were natural separations in the city. Covens tended to stick together, as well as shifter packs, but if you wanted to eat at the most exclusive restaurants or clubs, or shop in the nicest boutique shops, you needed to come to this area.

I never came here. Which is precisely why that was the first place I went after Ace gave me his hoodie and some spare cash to catch a cab. He hadn’t been aware of the true danger I was in and was all too willing to help me out.

I had a feeling that Ace was a bit rebellious and an adrenaline junkie.

The complete opposite of me. Normally.

It’s not that I didn’t think Kieran could keep me safe, I was sure he could, but I felt stifled and just needed some time to myself. I needed to think.

That’s how I found myself at Inferno’s bar, twirling a pink umbrella around an equally pink drink. I wasn’t sure what was in it, but it tasted like cranberries, and I liked it.

The stool beside me was pulled out, and a tall, imposing man sat down. He leaned in close and spoke softly, “Are you in need of assistance?”

His voice was decadent and screamed sex, as did the rest of him.

He was tall, his muscular form fitted perfectly in a black suit, his jawline unnaturally sharp. His skin was sun-kissed, his nose straight and thin, his eyes a startling ocean blue.

Just looking at him made you instantly think of sex.

And then it hit me.

He was an incubus.

“I’m sorry. What did you say?” My mind had completely blanked, and I couldn’t remember what he'd asked for the life of me.

His lips twitched. “Are you in need of assistance?”

“Oh. No, thank you. I’m fine. I just came here to think.”

His brow furrowed, and he leaned back in his stool to examine me curiously. “You came to a club to think?”

I could understand his confusion. It was weird.

I sighed. “It’s the one place nobody would think to look for me.”

“Ahh,” he said and readjusted his cuff links. “I see.”

I’d never seen anyone so perfectly dressed. There wasn’t a single wrinkle in his suit. How was that even possible?

“Well, if you decide that you’re stuck and need a hand, give me a call.”

“There you are! Bitch, what the hell?” At hearing Akira’s voice, I whipped my head around.

She stood a few feet behind me, dressed in a crop top, cargo pants, and Dock Martins — her long, black hair flowing down her back, her lavender eyes gleaming in the dim lighting.

Instant worry for her flowed through me. “Are you insane, Kira? Why would you come here?”

While my blood had been a secret until recently, Akira had always known who her parents were, and if that information ever got out, she would be killed.
