Once again, I rushed out of my cabin with Rebecca behind me, responding to the sound of horrible scream. This time though, I knew the person who was emitting it. Pushing through the doorway, I found the door to Clara and Trevor’s cabin open just a few doors down from us. People were already starting to pour out of their rooms, probably thinking another fire had mysteriously broken out. What they found however was something even more disturbing.

“Oh my God!” Rebecca shouted from beside me, her hand going up to her mouth in shock as she took in the situation. “Are you okay? Where’s Trevor?”

I looked myself and saw the woman on her knees, tears spilling down her cheeks and blood all over her hands and knees. She looked up at Rebecca with strange, confused eyes and an open mouth.

“I went out for ice,” she said, her voice ragged and her lips quivering. I looked past her, at the room itself. The entire place was a mess, and blood had been smeared across the walls. “I just wanted ice and then I stopped by the casino. Trevor doesn’t like me gamble. He never has, but I just wanted to see if I’d get lucky. I just wanted-”

“Clara, where is Trevor?” I asked, repeating the question Rebecca had asked. “Where is your husband?”

“I don’t- I don’t know,” she admitted. “When I got back, the room was like this, and he was just gone.”

Just as the detective in me had come to the forefront, the healer in Rebecca rushed forward. She knelt down, grabbing Clara’s arms and inspecting her. “Are you hurt, Clara? Whose blood is this?”

Clara’s eyes weren’t wide. She looked down at her arms as well, as if she was only know considering the idea that maybe she was hurt, that maybe this blood was hers.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Is it mine? Do you- do you think it’s Trevor’s?”

“I’m not sure,” Rebecca said in a stern but calming voice. “I need you calm down though, okay? I need to look you over to make sure you’re not hurt, and I need you to cooperate with me to get that done. Do you understand what I’m saying to you right now, Clara?”

She was talking to the woman in the same way you might speak to a child, but that made sense to me. I had been around enough emergencies, spoken to enough people in shock, to know how the situation has to be handled. Rebecca was doing exactly the right thing. She was doing her job. I needed to make sure I was doing mine as well.

“I need to get in there,” I said, looking down at Rebecca.

She didn’t look up at me, though that didn’t stop her from responding. ‘You sure that’s a good idea? That Nathan guy isn’t a fan of you, and he’s made the way he feels about you involving yourself in what goes on while on this ship very clear.”

“Yeah. Well, that Nathan guy isn’t here and, as you can see, this ship is quickly going to hell.
