The Shenandoah Life Insurance Company emerged from its challenging beginnings to become a major corporate citizen of the Roanoke Valley. When it finally opened for business on February 1, 1916, and began issuing policies, it received only a small mention at the bottom of page seven in the local newspaper. J.B. Fishburn, the man who had declined Boone’s overture, purchased the very first policy and later policy numbers 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 50,000, 60,000 and 100,000. Robert “Bob” Angell remained connected to Shenandoah Life for the rest of his life. He died on November 12, 1933, and at the time of his death he had pledged everything he owned as security for eight thousand shares of Shenandoah Holding Company, a stock reclamation company for Shenandoah Life. As for Colonel John Boone, Shenandoah Life Insurance Company was his last business venture as he collapsed and died at his summer home in Neponsit, Long Island, on January 24, 1916. His son had died just a few days earlier of pneumonia in St. Louis, Missouri. They were both laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, following a double funeral.
