Chapter 23

The lack of a gated entrance to the King property surprised Russell. He turned onto the driveway and parked in front of the massive Tudor house. Light shone through two windows, one upstairs, one downstairs. The heavy warding prickled his senses as soon as he got out of his truck. How had somebody gotten past that? Whoever it was had to be good, and not just a run-of-the-mill thief, either. Getting past a ward like this took magical skill, and not a little. He could think of a couple of people off the top of his head. A warning to both might be in order.

A scream shattered his thoughts. He drew his gun from the clip holster at his back as he rushed up the steps. He uttered the words of a spell, which caused the sigils carved into the Colt’s pearl grips and stainless steel barrel to glow Halloween orange. He aimed at the door, pulled the trigger, and a blast of energy discharged from the weapon. It hit the door, short-circuiting both the magical and mundane security systems as the orange light of the spell clashed with the blue of the ward. An alarm blared inside the house. Russell opened the door, the knob burning his hand. He ignored the pain and rushed inside.

Zoe stepped out of a room to the left, holding a fireplace poker aloft. She looked unharmed, pissed off, a little confused, and so fucking beautiful it hurt. He called her name as he lowered his weapon.

She opened her mouth then closed it just as quickly. “I didn’t think you’d get here until tomorrow.”

He holstered the Colt then took a hesitant step closer. “It’s after midnight. That counts as tomorrow.”

The corners of her lips tipped up. Russell looked her up and down, let himself drink in the sight of her. Golden hair down her back, eyes that missed nothing, full lips he wanted to trace with his fingertips. Full breasts pushing against the thin fabric of her top, long legs he needed wrapped around him right the hell now, black polish on her toes. He took another step closer.

A ringtone sounded. Zoe pulled a phone out of her back pocket and checked the screen. “I need to take this. It’s the security company.”

Russell nodded. “Of course.”

She disappeared into the room she’d come from. Russell nodded again, this time to himself. Maybe to confirm what a giant fool he was. This was not exactly the way he’d hoped things would go. He hadn’t expected her to throw herself into his arms. Hoped, sure, but not expected. That tiny half smile was a good sign, though. Right?

Or maybe he was reading too much into things. Now he felt like an idiot as well as a fool. He closed the
