Chapter Twenty-Two

The turn the conversation had taken was killing the vibe. A fight with Vince was not anything I was interested in. So after a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, I remembered the food. Maybe our blood sugar was too low.

“There’s dinner, remember?” I said, pointing to the cooler. And whether he was actually hungry or wanting the distraction, I’m not sure. But he opened the cooler and pulled them out.

We ate the sandwiches, each having a beer to wash them down, and then Vince poured another whiskey, taking note of my still relatively full glass.

“I see that the sipping-rule of whiskey is another thing you’ve remembered,” he said, the smile on his face reaching the crinkles around his eyes.

Phew, argument averted.

I laughed. “Of all the things I’ve remembered, that might be the most important.” I held up my glass, the amber liquid below the level of the now melting ice cubes. “It only took waking up a few times with no knowledge of the night before for me to remember—sip, don’t shoot.”

“Mantras are best when they’re simple like that. Look at all the things you’re learning about yourself. And you thought joining this tour was running away from being an adult. There are things to learn everywhere.” He winked like the wise old sage he was pretending to be, and whatever friction had been starting melted away.

It seemed neither of us wanted to let our impasse ruin the whole night. As nostalgic and magical as this rooftop was, it served to soften the edges of our opposing sides. We’d lapsed back into stories of our days on the road. Mostly I think he wanted to remind me of the good times, since I’d confessed I was just now remembering that we’d had them.

I let him top off my whiskey, cranking my head back to look at the stars.

“In my humble opinion, stargazing is best and easier when you lie on your back. Unobstructed view.” He motioned to the blanket I’d brought. I nodded, and he stood and spread it in the space in front of the chairs, then lay down.

As strange as it felt to lie so close to Vince, I joined him. Thinking all the while that if Davis had said this same thing it would have felt like a come-on, but with Vince it really was about the better view. Plus, I think both of us wanted a change of subject, or no subject at all.

“This sky makes me want to say something profound, but all I can come up with is how tiny it makes me feel. That seems so trite.”

We were lying side by side, not touching, but I could feel his warmth beside me.

“I know what you mean. Some things are just hard to put into words.”

I sat up and reached for my phone.

“That’s why there’s music.” I thumbed through my playlists until I found what I was looking for. A bootleg acoustic version of the album I so loved. I hit play and then lay back down.
