But instead of leaving with them, La Malinche turned the woman over to Cortes, allowing him to learn about the plot against him. Supposedly, Montezuma II had twenty thousand warriors lying in wait to kill the Spanish invaders. The leader of the Aztec Empire reportedly had visions that the Spaniards would end his reign and decided to do everything he could to keep that from happening. Montezuma hadn’t counted on La Malinche to spoil his plans.

Her actions impressed Cortes so much that he mentioned them to the Spanish rulers in a letter describing the Cholulan plot. Some historians have speculated that there was no plot to kill the conquistadors at all and that La Malinche simply concocted the story to curry favor with the Spanish. But others have refuted those theories, since a number of people around at the time documented the plot.
