CHAPTER 10

Montana rolled over to sunlight streaming across her face and bounded from bed. She never slept in. And what was that noise? It sounded like a plane approaching the landing strip, a sound she hadn’t heard since Charlie’s time.

She dressed quickly, grabbed a cup of coffee and stepped out onto the front porch, smack into a buzzing undercurrent of activity and excitement that she’d never heard before.

As if on cue, a ranch Jeep raced toward her and screeched to a stop with a spray of gravel. Steele sprang from behind the wheel, but the man with him took his time getting out. He was a tad shorter and stockier than Steele, his hair a burnished chestnut rather than raven’s-wing black, but side by side, there were more similarities than differences.

“Montana, meet my baby brother, Sloan.”

“Our parents saved the best for last.” Sloan removed his sunglasses to reveal dazzling blue eyes with faint lines at the corners. He seemed a more laid-back version of Steele, as if he had nothing but time and knew the rest of the world would wait for him. Or was that simply his façade? For she sensed he could, in his own way, be every bit as lethal as Steele.

His grip reminded her of Steele’s, the intimacy with which he held her hand and sized her up at the same time. “I made the mistake of asking big brother here if he needed anything. Turned out he needed his plane. Not quite what I had in mind, but here I am.”

“I’d do the same for you,” Steele said.

“I’ll remind you of those few well-chosen words.”

Montana’s gaze shifted from one brother to the other. “Why do I feel I’ve been left out of the loop?” She directed her words to Steele. “Are you going somewhere?”

“We,” Steele said. “How soon can you pack an overnight bag?”

Montana turned to Sloan. “Can you excuse us for a moment, please?”

“Sure thing. I’ll amble over to the bunkhouse and grab a coffee.”

Montana turned on Steele. “What are you up to this time? And I’d appreciate the truth, if that’s possible.”

His eyes grew as steely as his name. “You need resort and spa staff if you have a prayer of opening on time. You’ve been poring over that stack of resumes for days now.”

“Which is no concern of yours,” she said stiffly.

“Cut the bull. You know who I am. You know what I do.”

“I know you lied.”

His mouth tightened. “I do what has to be done. I don’t always like it.”

“I don’t need your help.”

“Montana you’re in over your head. You can’t afford to delay the opening. I make the impossible happen.”

Understatement! “Did I not make it abundantly clear last night that I’m not one to sit quietly and passively while you run the show?”

“Abundantly.” His look rekindled the smoldering remnants of last night’s adventure. She swore she could feel sparks dancing through her bloodstream as she glanced around to make sure no one could overhear.

“So this is how you retaliate? Wrest
