CHAPTER TEN

Bran

I promised her parents answers before I left on my quest to find my missing bride. Now that I have found her and talked with her, I wish I had never told them that I would give them an update. The more I think about how they sold my mate to the highest bidder, using her womb as a bargaining chip, the more disgusted I feel.

I knock on the door of the mansion, built with the money they made from selling their other daughters, and take a deep breath. They are upstanding members of the clan and angering them is not going to do me any favors.

“Sir, you are highly anticipated. Mr. and Mrs. Walsh await you in the grand parlor,” their butler tells me, and I wait until his back is turned, to roll my eyes. Who has a butler these days? The Walshs stick to the old customs fiercely.

“Excuse me, but have you found my sister.” A short voluptuous woman, clad in red leather stands in front of me. In her sky-high boots, she is almost my height. Her fierce, dark eyes bore into mine and her hands are on her hips. She is beautiful and dangerous. My lips twitch. It’s no wonder that Caleb is head over heels for Venetia. I haven’t seen her recently. and she has grown into quite a beauty, with a whole lot of sass.

“Yes, I found her. Has she not contacted your family?”

A look of sadness passes briefly over Venetia’s face before her hard look returns.

“I tried to run, and, now, I’m not allowed out. I’m a prisoner in this house.” She turns over her wrist and I feel my blood boil.

She has been marked. It’s an ancient custom meant to keep unruly daughters in check. If she steps over the threshold without permission, she will feel extreme pain, and if she continues trying to ignore the pain she will pass out and be hauled back into the house.

“This is just barbaric. Do your parents not know what century this is?” I ask her, my dragon seething inside of me.

“Sir, if you would please. The Mr. and Mrs. are waiting.”

“In a moment,” I snap at the butler. He looks at Venetia and purses his lips in disapproval. Does he really think I’m after another Walsh girl?

“Just go. They will punish me for detaining you,” she whispers.

“Your sister is fine. I have spoken with her and she is well and hiding away with a friend of hers,” I whisper to her and put a finger to my lips.

She smiles a little and nods. Whatever I do, I’m going to find a way to release her from this house. Her parents may be well-respected, but my family is much more powerful.

“Don’t worry. I’m going to get you out of here. Be at your bedroom window tomorrow at midnight.”

She nods cautiously and then frowns “Isn’t one Walsh girl enough for you?”

I chuckle “I don’t want you for me. I just can’t stand to see you trapped here.
