I was happy I was able to have a relaxing night with Wyatt because driving to Emma’s house I felt anything but relaxed. I had no idea what was going to happen with this talk, but I hoped we could get back to some semblance of normal. I really missed my best friend.

I sat in Emma’s driveway for a minute before finally shutting off my car, then slowly made my way up to her front door. I took a deep breath before I knocked, then held it while I waited for her to answer.

It wasn’t long before the door was opened and I was staring into those gorgeous blue eyes. I stood there frozen, fine with getting lost in them for the moment. Emma apparently felt the same way because she didn’t move either.

Much too soon, Emma cleared her throat and moved to the side. “Sorry. Come in.” Her eyes moved around her house as though she was trying to look anywhere but at me. “Do you want a drink?”

“Water would be good.”

Emma nodded her head and I followed her to the kitchen where she silently poured me a glass of water. I took a long sip before sitting it back down on the counter. “So…”

“So…” Emma repeated.

We both started to laugh at the same time and I shook my head at my own awkwardness. “We’re making this really weird, aren’t we?”

“We are. I’m sorry. I just don’t know what to say.”

“Well, why don’t you start by telling me how you feel about everything?”

“This can’t happen…”

Not exactly an answer, but it was a start. “Okay.”

Emma shook her head like she was frustrated. “It’s just… this can’t be who I am. My parents have certain expectations. Being gay doesn’t fit those expectations.”

“That’s fine, Emma, I completely understand. I just want things to go back to normal between us. You don’t have to—”

“But that kiss!” Emma interrupted. She threw her hands in the air and began pacing around the room, quickly burning a path back and forth across the kitchen. “I wanted it to be bad. I really wanted it to be bad. It wasn’t though. It was… ugh.” Emma stopped pacing, coming to a stop just a few inches in front of me. She was close enough to touch and I had to remind myself not to do that. She looked into my eyes and just stared at me while tears came to hers. “I don’t want to be gay.”

This time I did reach out and push a piece of hair behind her ear. “Listen, Emma, I get it.”

Emma shook her head. “No. No you don’t. The thing is, I don’t want to be gay, but I need to do this.”

She put a hand on each of my cheeks and crashed her lips into mine, shocking my body to life.

All of the feelings I tried to suppress all week came back, now stronger than ever. Emma didn’t waste any time slipping her tongue into my mouth, and that was more than okay with me.
