Chapter Twenty-One

Imre

By the time I arrived back for my turn to watch Jessa in her room later that day, I found her and Quillon chatting and giggling quietly to each other.

I wasn’t sure exactly what emotion took hold of me as I unlocked the door and stepped inside, but something hot and furious burned in my veins. My heart thrummed as my eyes landed on the two speaking as if they were lovers, and my throat constricted a bit. When Jessa looked up to meet my eyes, I realized I knew exactly what emotion was raging through my body.

Envy.

I wanted to be the one Jessa sat next to, whispering her luscious voice in my ear. For a brief moment, as Quillon leaned away from her, I debated grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and tossing him to the other side of the room to make space for myself. I imagined Jessa’s laugh as a I did so, as if she’d just been holding out for me instead of enjoying her chat with my foster brother.

It’s not that I wished any harm on Quillon, but my desire to have Jessa all to myself was growing a mile a minute at this point.

“Any news from Etan?” Quillon asked, his gray eyes leveling on me.

The ends of my mouth curled into a smile as a new thought popped into my head. “Yeah, actually. He wants us to do something.”

“Go on.”

I swung my gaze to Jessa, relishing in the idea I’d just come up with. “Etan doesn’t think we’re showing enough, uh, hostility towards Jessa. He thinks someone, or even Triton, might call us out for being too friendly to her. I mean, considering Jessa just kind of seems to roll with everything so far. She hasn’t fought back.”

Jessa shifted on the bed, drawing her knees up to her chest. “It’s not like there would be any point. If I fought back, I’d probably get the shit beaten out of me. Pardon my language.”

Quillon cracked a smile, but I ignored him for the time being. Just imagining Gael or Quillon spending more time with Jessa than me was nearly making me go nuts on the inside. “He doesn’t really want you to fight back, but rather he wants you to run away, or pretend to at the very least.”

She frowned. “But then Triton’s men will come after me.”

“Exactly. That means us. All you have to do is run until someone else sees you, and then one of us will capture you, proving our loyalty and keeping up appearances.”

She and Quillon shared a look. “I guess that makes sense…” she said. “When are we supposed to do that?”

“Right now.”

She groaned, rising from her seat on the bed. “Seriously? I’m already exhausted, though!”

I blinked, glancing at Quillon. “What you have done that made you exhausted, sitting in this room all day?”

Jessa coughed and blushed slightly. “Let’s just get this over with then.”

Nodding, I pushed open her bedroom door and held it open for the duo to stumble out.
