Chapter Sixteen

We practically run to work, and I haven’t brushed my hair. Sleep still in my eyes, no coffee. By the time we make it to the office everyone is already there.

“Nice of you to join us.” Mr. Hendricks’ looks at our rumpled clothing and takes one look at us, before laughing.

“What happened to you guys this morning?” Jennie asks without smiling at us.

“I overslept and Carol came banging on my door until I got up.” I tell her easily, feeling my face flush.

Jennie doesn’t take my lie for a second and I know that she’s already seeing us as a match.

“What are you doing?” Jennie asks me when Carol goes to clock in.

“Nothing. It’s as simple as that.” I glare at her she has no business asking me about my personal life. I think that some of it’s already been brought to the open with the secret admirer and that’s as far as it’s going to go.

“You can’t expect this person to come out if you’re not willing to stand alone.” Jennie whispers to me as she sees Carol coming back toward us.

I don’t say anything in response. I don’t even have time to.

“Ms. Helms.” I hear Mr. Hendricks calling to me.

“Kendra!” I shout out as I make my way to his office. Not liking the fact that he still calls me by my last name.

“Come in and shut the door.” He tells me, there’s no smile on his face.

I do as he says and walk toward the empty chair that’s on the opposite side of his desk. I sit down with a scowl on my face and my arms crossed my chest.

“Look, if this is about being late. I’ve never been late in my life. You know that. I’m always showing up early and staying late when you need me to.” I point out to him before he can even open his mouth.

I’m still upset with Jennie. She has no right to tell me what to do.

“You watched the interview last night.” He tells me, sitting back in his office chair, looking less intimidating to me.

“Oh my God, if someone talks about it one more time I’m going to scream.” I glare at him.

“Today there were no signs of love around here. I think it’s because of the friendship that you have with Carol.” He tells me.

“What? She’s the one who convinced me to go. If it wasn’t for her I would’ve just let that bus roll on by. You all need to stop getting into my personal life.” I hiss at him.

“Your personal life is what’s keeping your job if you haven’t forgotten. If this ends on a bad note, then you can kiss it goodbye. Everyone around here is buying things from the newspaper from the full paper to the flyers that we are now charging fifty cents apiece for until Valentine’s day and then we need to figure something out to do.” He explains to me.

“So, because I have a life outside of this secret
