Chapter 18

Lex

Once the adrenaline faded, I came to my senses. Bloodied and bruised, I glanced at Cheyenne. He was still standing, just as battered as I. I craned my neck to see that Dimitri had been totally unscathed after spending most of the evening breaking up the fighters, killing their buzz, and trying to get folks to go home. I rummaged in my pocket for my command whistle, then blew it.

“Break it up, everyone. It’s time to get back to the barracks,” I announced.

The fight was pretty much over at that point, with just a few verbal altercations still taking place. Most of the punches had already been thrown. Reluctantly, everyone cleaned up the mess and made their way out of the building into the desolate streets. It had to be almost three in the morning.

While most of Navarrah City slept, we were dragging our drunk asses home. Amazingly, our driver was still waiting for me, Cheyenne, and Aria at this incredibly late hour. I’d make sure my father knew he was a loyal servant. For a moment, I thought of Aria and the fact that she, too, was a servant, but because of her talent and ambitions, she would never be as loyal. Servitude didn’t suit her. Aria deserved her freedom.

As soon as we were in the car, Cheyenne relaxed. “Thank you guys for coming to my rescue in there. I mean, they were all on me. I don’t even know where it started or why.” He gave a bewildered shake of his head.

“It was a boisterous, drunken naval officer who started it. Ulryk, treasonous bastard that he is, took advantage of the chaos to get a few punches in,” I told him.

“He really has a lot of resentment toward us and our family. You’d think he’d be happy being the beta’s son, but he’s always out for blood.”

“He won’t be happy until our blood has been spilled and he’s stolen the throne,” I said.

“Well, the bastard’s not going to get it.” Cheyenne shifted uncomfortably in the seat as the driver pulled up to the estate. We exited the car, and once the driver had pulled away, Aria took the reversal potion out of her pocket, drank it, and mumbled something to herself.

Her beard vanished, and the masculine planes of her face morphed back into the beautiful face I knew so well. Her scent came back, instantly driving my wolf wild.

Cheyenne blinked at her transformation, then shook his head. “Well, it’s very late, or early, rather. I’m going to go wash up and tend to these bruises. Good night and thanks again for having my back.” He started along the path to the Redveign estate.

“I’ll just see Aria home,” I said to Cheyenne as he left.

“Good night, Cheyenne,” Aria added, and he waved at her.

She and I walked quietly toward the Bevata servants’ quarters. Once there, I tucked myself in the shadow of a tall, leafy tree. Frowning, Aria followed me.

“Good night, Lex,” she said, ready to turn in for the night, but I pulled her to me under the cover of darkness.
