Colton forced the last of the sandwich down. There was nothing wrong with the food itself, but the knots in his stomach didn’t make it very easy to eat. He’d been so enraged when he’d gotten that call from Mr. Jackson, and he could hardly believe his ears when he’d heard that his cattle were on someone else’s land. Colton knew he was fortunate that he and Mr. Jackson were on good terms, because there was no telling just how much bigger of a disaster this would’ve turned out to be if it was someone else.

His anger and frustration had completely overridden all his logic, or else he would’ve listened to his mother and brought Flint out there instead of Willa. His brother was just as much at fault, after all. But Willa was the one who’d opened the gate, so it had made sense to make her atone for what she’d done.

Now he had to wonder what the hell he’d been thinking, or maybe what he hadn’t been thinking. Willa was beautiful in the daylight, but she was a mystic beauty out there by the glow of the stars, the moon, and the fire. She’d taken off her hat and shook out her hair, making herself at home on a thin blanket under the night sky. It was easy to see just how romantic this spontaneous little campout could be if he let it.

It wasn’t that simple, though. Nothing was when it came to Willa.

“Can I ask you something?” Her voice was like velvet in the night. She sat with her hands wrapped around her knees, leaning back slightly and soaking in what little scenery was available in the dim light.

“Sure.” God help him if it had anything to do with the two of them. If Willa asked him to, he would’ve gladly joined her on her bedroll, no matter what it meant for either of their careers. His wolf was fully aware of just how alone they were, being so far both from his own house and the Jacksons’.

“Why would Flint tell me to let the cattle out that gate?” She asked the question with curiosity, but not hate or anger. He had to give her a hell of a lot of credit for that. “I mean, this ranch is part of his family, too. I don’t understand.”

Colton sighed. “There’s a lot about Flint I don’t understand.”

“Oh?”

He let out another sigh. It wasn’t as though there was a simple answer for this. “You see, Flint is my brother, but he’s adopted. My parents didn’t think they were able to have any children, and when they had a chance of getting a boy to raise as their own, they jumped at it. I was born just a couple of years later. It never made any difference to my parents. They were determined to raise Flint as their own, and none of us have ever pointed out that he’s not related by blood. It didn’t matter.” Colton remembered how it was growing up.
