“I’ve been thinking,” Soraya announced.

“Not again, Soraya!” Tivali exclaimed.

“I think we should match Jasmine with a kitten or two. She’d be thrilled, I’m sure.”

“Who’s Jasmine?” Bygul asked.

“Starlight’s daughter.”

“You know we don’t involve children in our matchmaking efforts, Soraya,” Bygul said sternly. “We can’t be breaking children’s hearts when their parents refuse to allow them to keep the cats.”

“I know, but I’m sure Starlight wouldn’t do that.”

“There’s no guarantee of that and you know it,” Tivali said.

“Besides, I doubt we’ll have to match Jasmine at all,” Muezza said.

“Why’s that?” Soraya asked.

“She’s been working on a letter to Santa.”

“Ohh.” The other cats exclaimed.

“That’s purrfect,” Tivali said.

“As long as Santa Kitty doesn’t get involved,” Bygul said sourly.

“But I also wanted to match her mom,” Soraya wailed.

“What?” Bygul, Tivali and Muezza exclaimed.

“She deserves a happily ever after too,” Soraya said.

“We can’t possibly match every single citizen of Zero, Kansas, Soraya,” Bygul said. “We committed to the witches and that’s all. We need to get serious about finding the right familiar for Jo or we’re never going to finish with this Coven.”

“Fine,” Soraya said.

“I think we should stop letting the humans see the cats, at least until we know for sure they’re not going to freak out. The cats, that is,” Muezza said.

“That’s a great idea,” Tivali said. “I feel so bad for Jo every time it doesn’t work out.”

“We’ve never had such difficulty matching a cat before,” Soraya said. “Do you think our goddess magic is failing us?”

The four cats looked at each other in silence for a moment, then as one, they all said, “Nah.”

For the next several weeks, they tried cat after cat, with no success whatsoever.

The only part that was successful was their ability to mask the cats’ presence in the coven house so that Jo was spared the additional heartbreak of bonding with yet more cats, only to discover they weren’t the right fit for her.

Most of the cats they brought in attacked Jo’s plants as if it was their mission in life to destroy her gardens.

It required quite a bit of goddess magic to heal the plants fast enough that Jo never noticed what was happening.

The few cats who didn’t attack her plants were busy growling at the witches or the wolves or the magic the witches wielded, or on one memorable occasion, the other cats.

All of them.

That particular situation made absolutely no sense to Bygul since the cat in question had come from the waiting room, where he had co-existed with hundreds of other cats without a single issue.

The minute they transported him to the witches’ coven house, though, he threw himself into defending that territory against any and all intruders, including the other cats who’d already laid claim to the territory.

Since the other cats couldn’t see him stalking them, chaos had been the result.

Even worse was that he also perceived Bygul and the others as intruders and had viciously attacked them whenever they came near, thus delaying his return as they attempted to coordinate their efforts to catch him again.
