Chapter 10

Nazari’s last words continued to echo through Olivia’s head as she readied for bed later that night after Anteros had escorted Nazari back to his vessel. Tying the sash of her lavender robe at her waist, she paced back and forth in front of the warmth of the fire as Anteros collected a pistol from the top drawer of his bedside table and tucked it down the front of his tan rawhide breeches, adding it to the arsenal he already carried on his body. “Must you leave this night?”

“Giovani and I have a standing assignment to ride to each of the guard-stations positioned around the coastline of Paradiso and ensure each and every hole in our defenses are plugged. No one will be permitted to breach our safe haven. I also need to speak to each of the watchpoint guards before I depart, which must be tonight since I’m leaving on the morrow, as per Shira’s plan. Algiers, and the settling of scores, awaits.” Tugging on the cuffs of his jacket, he came around the bed and closed the distance between them. “By tomorrow eve, I’ll be rendezvousing with Nazari inside Hazim’s palace.”

“You’re staying right here behind these fortified walls.”

“But—”

“No buts. This is where you’re safest, and where you’ll stay.” He stroked one finger under her chin, drew her tighter against him with his arm around her waist.

“Is there anything I can say or do to change your mind?”

“I would be a fool to take you and our unborn child into our enemy’s territory. If Hazim ever got his greedy hands on you, I would—” He halted, his voice getting brutally hard. “Rather than just kill him, I’d have him drawn and quartered, his body torn into four pieces and hung about his city for the scavenger birds to peck at. I may still do that to ensure Nazari has had his full vengeance.”

“For the first time, I can actually imagine how you two might have been friends in the past.”

“We think much alike, and we always shall. I’ve also never professed to being a gentleman. You’re aware of my true nature.” He tapped her nose. “Give me your word you’ll remain here.”

“I’ll remain here.” She gave a consigning nod, trailed her fingertips back and forth across his smooth
