Chapter Four

Her lipstick was not right. Stacy leaned closer to the bathroom mirror, her nose almost touching the glass. She needed to get her lips just right. She wanted them to be so appealing, Ten would not resist any urge he might have to kiss them. She was not going to miss out on another opportunity with him tonight.

A knock on her door caught her attention and her stomach fluttered. He was here. She gave the neck of her black Donna Karan dress a quick tug to show off a bit more cleavage, then opened the door. The man waiting for her on the threshold was breathtaking, dapper and handsome in a dark suit, with a vibrant green tie and shined shoes. Her heart beat a little faster, her blood became a little hot.

“Hi,” she said, grabbing her clutch purse off the dresser. Her voice was more breathless than she wanted to be, and she hoped her school girl excitement didn’t show too much on her face.

“Hi.” His gaze touched on her hair, her face, the bare expanse of her skin, every flick of his gaze making her tingle inside. “You look sensational.”

When he took her arm and escorted her downstairs, she felt like Cinderella at the ball. There was a dashing man by her side and the night was full of promise. She felt beautiful with him, confident in every way, and she noticed that heads turned when they entered the room. She was the luckiest woman in the world.

The ballroom was filled with a sea of round tables, adorned in shell-pink linens, gleaming silverware, and crystal glassware. They choose seats on the far left side of the room, close enough to see the stage, but far enough away that they could sneak out if they wanted to. Not that she wanted to sneak out, she told herself as he held out a chair for her. Just an option. Just in case.

He sat down beside her, and she caught a dash of crimson in his otherwise dark hair. She reached over and touched the soft strands, crumbling the dry red substance between her fingers. “You have paint in your hair.”

He grinned sheepishly. “Yeah, that happens sometimes.”

“Are you working on something new?” she asked, brushing the last remnants away.

“No, it’s actually something I’ve been working on for a while now.”

“Did you finish it?”

He shook his head, reached out, and hooked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Not yet.”

She knew Ten well enough to know that he was holding something back, but she couldn’t imagine what it could be. “I’d love to see it.”

He nodded once and she waited for him to tell her more, but Peter Walker sat down next to them, destroying the moment. She and Ten greeted Peter and his companion, a VP at a firm she was not familiar with.

Tuxedoed waiters circulated the room with pitchers of water and bottles of champagne and the ballroom hummed with greetings and small talk. Stacy sipped her champagne.
