ADAM THOROUGHLY ENJOYED his time with Laura’s “friend family,” as she so lovingly called them. Carter was hilarious and extremely fun to be around and Kayla had a whip-smart sense of humor. Joy and Sam seemed to be the sweetest people on the planet and the children were all adorable. Having spent time with Aaron’s kids, especially recently, Adam really enjoyed hanging with the little tykes.

Chloe dragged out a bucket of sidewalk chalk from the children’s play area in the corner of the rooftop and he proceeded to sit with her and draw on the cemented surface for what seemed like hours. The chalk was enormous in her hand and her tiny tongue would stick out as she concentrated on coloring. Her drawings were a delightful mess and he colored along with her, enthralled by how she directed him. Filled with pride, he decided she was a leader and would become President one day. Yep, that sounded about right.

Glancing up, he noticed Laura gazing at them, chin resting on her fist as she sat at the picnic table. She smiled wistfully and he waved, giving her a quick wink. She was gorgeous in the waning light of the sun as it set behind the large buildings. Those long legs seemed to shimmer, causing him to imagine running his tongue over every dip and hollow. The thought of nuzzling the back of her knee made him so hard that he thought he might burst. Reminding himself that children were present, he attempted to focus on the boring sidewalk chalk.

Her admission had stunned him. How could someone as beautiful and sexually forward as Laura remain abstinent for four years? His mind drifted to the handful of women he’d lain with during his deployment. They’d all been on various bases he visited, all of them used to sleeping with the soldiers who trailed through. His trysts with them had been brief and untethered. Those were the types of intimacies he was used to. But now he was free of the constant deployments. Free to build something more permanent in his life. Would it be possible to build that with Laura? To create something with her and Chloe that was all their own?

Although he’d lain with a few women over the past few years, Laura’s face has been the one emblazoned in his mind. He thought of her so often he sometimes thought he’d gone mad, clutching onto something that was supposed to only last for one night. Smiling at his daughter as she sat beside him, concentrating with all her might on coloring the concrete blue, he realized he must’ve known somewhere deep within. Must’ve sensed that his incredibly passionate and meaningful night with Laura would lead to more. Feeling extremely lucky, he gazed at her, blood pounding in his veins as she threw back her head and laughed at something Kayla said. Filled with a pulsing desire to be the one who made her laugh that jubilantly, he committed to exploring his feelings for her.
