TRACKER

At the end of the day, or week, or maybe life, the only things that mattered were the people you loved.

I was spending way too much time without them. Training guards and managing schedules, especially with the threat of the Yukon pack, were critical. But at what cost? When did I need to say no? When could I? At what point was I justified in letting someone else take over for a night?

There was no fair answer. Everyone I worked with had someone they’d rather be with. They just had more opportunities to do that than I did because I was the boss.

I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to this community while I was hanging out at home.

But Kali needed me. She made that clear, and ignoring her was just as bad, if not worse, than leaving my post.

“Tracker?” Hudson leaned forward toward me on the desk. “When was the last time you slept?”

I shrugged. “Yesterday, I think.”

“Why don’t you head home? You’re no good to anyone barely able to stand, let alone fight, if the need arises.”

I rubbed my face, noting the significant bags under my eyes.

He cringed. “Yeah, I didn’t want to say anything, but the zombie look isn’t great on you.”

It was stupid, but having someone else suggest I leave felt like the permission I’d been waiting for.

“Are you sure you’ve got everything handled?” He was only a few years younger than I was, but I couldn’t shake my need to protect and watch over him.

“I’ve got this. Get out of here.” He made a shooing motion.

I sighed and pushed up from the table. “Thanks. If you need anything––”

“I’ll call Jack since he’s the shift lead.”

I shook my head and called over my shoulder as I headed out. “Have a good night.”

“You too.”

I hurried back to the house while mentally bouncing between wanting to pass out on my bed for twelve hours and wanting to see Kali. If she was awake, then I’d stay up. I glanced up through the trees, grinning at the clear night sky, then checked on an app on my phone.

The perfect idea was forming. Sleep would have to wait.

I opened the door and didn’t bother taking off my coat. “Kali?”

The lights were on in the kitchen, so I headed back and found her sitting on the counter while Rodney and Masie stood across from her. Masie rested her head on her mate’s shoulder.

“Hey,” I greeted them before wrapping my arms around my girl. She was at the right height for me to not even have to lean down to place a quick kiss on her lips. “Hi, babe.”

She pulled back with a shy grin. “Babe?”

I nodded. “I’m trying it out. What do you think?”

She scrunched her nose, then rocked her head from side to side. “I don’t hate it.”

“But you don’t love it?” I asked, and she shrugged. “I’ll keep thinking.”

“Hey,” Rainer called as he strode into the room and went straight to the fridge. “Are there any leftovers? I’m starving.
