Chapter Nine

Courtney had made dinner, steaks and potato salad with the help of Jamie. They listened to music, talked, found each other smiling when the other wasn’t looking.

Courtney had never been this happy herself.

“Did you ever take any other girl on trips like this?” Jamie asks, wondering if she was the only one.

“No, either they weren’t interested in the woods, spending time away from the internet or even the stars. I can’t say that I’ve brought anyone on long road trips. The longest was going to the store.” Courtney giggles.

Jamie shakes her head, but there's a smirk on her face none the less.

"Well, I feel special. None of my friends do things like this either. They'd rather go to the beach if they're not going to make money. I'm that way too, for the most part only because no one has taken the time to get to know what I like and what I don't like. Kelli and I are good friends. I’ll give her that she knows everything about me. But it doesn't mean she has the time for it," Jamie explains to her, sitting down and eating with Courtney at the small table.

"Yeah, sometimes we get wrapped up in the things that we need to get done without making time for fun. I'm not the type that likes to stay at work all the time. I like to have fun too. Mostly on the weekends, though. If I can spare time, then anyone can," Courtney points out to her.

Jamie agrees with her to a point. But, silently, she thinks that even sometimes she's too busy for her own friends when they want her to go out clubbing, or even out for drinks after a long day. She was always trying to come up with an excuse for why she couldn't go.

Not that Jamie wasn’t happy for her friends, she was. She wasn’t the one talking about a new man that had come into her life, a new thing that she found interesting. She was more in the house, not meeting anyone, not wanting to spend her time with anyone, hardly thinking about spending time with herself.

"There are times that I ignore them," Jamie confesses, biting down on her lip.

Courtney doesn’t say anything, though Jamie can see the expression on her face. A little shocked that Jamie would do something like that.

“There are times when you have to take time for yourself too. You need to be selfish with your time.” Courtney tries to save her from the statement, trying to let her know that it doesn’t apply to her.

"I'm too selfish with my time. Sometimes I’ll look at the phone and not answer it. That's what I had done to Kelli when she came and talked to you. I ignored her. She made it a point to be a good friend and come over. Dragging out what my issue was." Jamie won't fault her friends for being caring.

"I don't have many friends. I hardly speak to my family. I find it easier to deal with my life alone.
