The Sugar Bowl
With the bowlâs top off, I knew it was time to strike.
Darting quickly, I somehow avoided the gaze of the elderly couple who owned the bowl, and the house that contained the sugar bowl, as well as the other foods and items contained within. I only had a base understanding of the concept of ownership, but I know enough to realize that these two wrinkly creatures often left sweet fruit out in cold metallic bowls on the counter, rotting in the sun and the air. I often found myself getting to taste delicacies I never fathomed, feasting on beads of fruit-sugars as bananas, apples, and other treats went uneaten.
Today was different. After getting a small taste of leftover white granules that the old man accidentally spilled on the counter while refilling the colorful ornate bowl, I knew I found my new favorite treat. When my legs dipped into the shaky white powder, I scanned the area. The intoxicatingly sweet aroma of the sugar made every part of my body quiver in anticipation. As my eyes darted around at the mountain of magic I was standing on, the old woman placed the top back on the bowl, thrusting me into complete darkness.
It didnât matter to me. I had what I wanted. Tasting the delicacy beneath my feet, I entered a realm of ecstasy few could ever attain. The enzymes in my body began to pulse, and when I glanced back to my feet, I felt my digestive juices begin to splurge outward, all over the sugar under my body. The trembling mountain of white softened a bit, and I started sinking into it, tasting it more with my feet. As the sweetness digested, I dipped my proboscis into the heavenly nectar and began drinking it. The taste sent me over the edge, and more digestive enzymes erupted from within, every inch of my body craving the taste and feel of the liquified magic.
I felt the entire bowl suddenly begin to move. Scared, I started fluttering around in the dark, slamming into the walls and the lid. My powerful wings flapping hard, I landed in the pile again, and my body involuntarily erupted with digestive fluid. I instinctively began to suck up the digested fluids, even though one of my wings might have been damaged.
The bowl eventually stopped moving, and I was able to regain my footing inside, my legs sinking deeper into the white crystalline delight at my feet.
I wasnât able to escape the bowl, so it hit me that all I could do was eat. I spewed my digestive enzymes repeatedly all over the mountain, slurping more and more up as it became ready to eat. I felt my body surging, as if alive for the first time in my short life. The rush of energy I felt was new and vibrated from deep within my core. The sweet fluid that came from the enzymes turned my mind into pure discovery and imagery. The only instinct remaining in me was pure, unbridled gluttony.
