A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER Jodie saw Emma and Jack into Tateâs bedroom. He was stretched out on the covers, but once again heâd dressed in jeans and a shirt.
âWould you like some coffee? Some lunch?â Jodie offered. âMarie sent over soup this morning. I havenât looked to see what kind, but it sure smells good. Iâm thinking it might be chicken vegetable.â
When the visitors declined, Jodie left the roomâ¦something Tate hadnât expected.
The seating arrangement copied that of their first visitâhis mother perched on the boudoir chair and Jack, in uniform, made himself comfortable on a straight-backed chair from the kitchen.
They seemed disinclined to talk at first, as if they were having difficulty finding the right words. Tate let the moment draw out, then challenged, âDid you come all this way just to look at me?â
His mother folded her arms. âI suppose what weâd like is an explanation. Why didnât you want to see us, Tate? What possible harm can it do for us to talk? Weâre not your enemies, you know.â
âI neverââ
âWell, you certainly act like it!â
âAre you punishinâ us for some reason?â Jack demanded. âThatâs the only conclusion we can come up with when you cut yourself off like this.â
âI talk to youâboth of youâalmost every day.â
âMight as well be in Austin,â Jack grumbled. âTelephone doesnât let us see with our own eyes how youâre doinâ.â
âSoâ¦how do I look?â Tate asked. âAny different?â Heâd seen himself in the mirror this morning as he shaved. Very little, if anything, had changed. His face was still gaunt, his eyes tired, haunted.
His mother tipped her head. âI think there could be somethinâ. You donât look quite as tired.â
âWell, I am,â Tate snapped.
Jack leaned forward. âI donât care how much you hurt, son. You donât talk to your mother that way. Your daddy wouldnât like it.â
Tate grimaced. âIâm sorry.â
âTell her that,â Jack instructed.
Tate looked at his mother, who gazed back steadily. âIâm sorry,â he repeated, then he shot Jack a resentful look. âIâm not five years old, Jack. Donât talk to me like I am.â
âI talk to you like the age youâre actinâ,â Jack retorted. âFive seems about right.â
âSo, you came to pick a fight.â
âIâm not pickinâ nothinâ,â Jack denied. âYouâre the one whoâs spoilinâ for trouble.â
Emma intervened. âJodie looks better,â she said. âMore like she used to.â When that met with silence, she tried something else. âHas Jodie seen Jennifer yet? Itâs all over town that sheâs back at her fatherâs ranch. They used to be such good friends.â
âShe saw her yesterday,â Tate said.
Emma, who Tate knew liked nothing better than a good gossip about any matter unrelated to her job, asked, âDid she say why?â
âYouâll have to talk to Jodie.â
Jodie appeared in the doorway. âIâm sorry to interrupt, but Emmaâ¦Maeâs asked to see us. I wonder if youâd mindâI doubt itâll take long. She probably just wants to say hello.â
Emma glanced at Tate, who sensed her hesitation. But a request from Mae when you were on Parker land was a request from the Queen of the Realm.
