Rosie rolled over the next morning, hearing a loud knocking at the front door. She groaned and shoved the covers over her head. "Go away," she muttered, not expecting anyone to hear her.

The knocking didn't cease. Was it Marty showing up to give her a piece of his mind? It was too early to deal with her older brother. She doubted it was Samantha and it was unlikely to be Jackson, right? She'd snuck off. Wasn't that hint enough to leave her alone? Guys didn't usually track her down the next morning when she did that. Most were probably appreciative that there was no awkward morning after to deal with.

Another round of insistent knocks and she finally pulled herself out of bed, grabbed her white terrycloth robe and headed for the front door. She slowly unlocked it, tired and not ready for guests as she opened it to stare back at his piercing blue stare.

"Jackson?" What was he doing at her house?

"You left your wallet behind," he said, handing over her wallet that must have fallen out of her purse.

"Oh. Thanks. You didn't have to drive over this morning to bring it to me," she said, taking it from his grip.

"Did I do something wrong?" Jackson asked.

He certainly was direct. Rosie scratched the back of her neck and then pulled the robe tighter, as if he hadn't seen everything underneath it the night before. "Thank you for bringing me my wallet." She placed it on the kitchen counter, her stomach knotted as he loomed above her, well within her personal space.

"Do you make it a habit of sneaking off in the middle of the night?" Jackson asked.

She took a step back, using the island in the kitchen to grant her space between them, allowing her some distance. "No. I just, I'm not good with relationships. Plus, to be honest, I can't sleep anywhere but my own bed. I haven't been able to since as long as I can remember." Even as a kid when she had sleepovers, her friends always had to come and spend the night at her house. When she spent the night over at other friends' homes, her parents always ended up picking her up in the middle of the night.

His eyes narrowed, studying her expression. Was he trying to see if she was lying to him? Did he not believe her? It was the truth, but she also wasn't ready for any type of commitment from him or anyone else. She liked her relationships without strings and complications.

"You thought sneaking out was a good solution to the fact you can't fall asleep in another bed? How did you get home last night? Your car isn't out front, and I'd fathom a guess that it's at your work."

She didn't want to get Samantha into trouble. "I had a ride," she said, trying to be cryptic.

Jackson breathed a heavy sigh. "I'm just relieved to hear that you didn't walk all the way home. I was worried this morning when I woke up and you weren't anywhere around.
