CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JACK

We had been waiting at least an hour in the dark. It was difficult to tell here in the underworld. Even Wesley’s analogue watch had stopped the moment we’d passed through the gate at Abydos. The dark desert stretched out for miles around us, and the only thing in sight was the towering cliffs that held the seventh gate, which we kept well clear of, heeding Osiris’s warning. The desert was quiet, except for the occasional rustling of sand in the wind. It was almost eerie how silent it was out here, but that only added to the sense of unease we all felt. We sat for a while, chatting and trying to keep our spirits up, ignoring the overwhelming feeling of the sheer space around us. There was nothing like an ocean or a desert to make you feel tiny and insignificant in the world. Eventually, though, the talk died out and we sat staring off into space.

As time passed, we began to get anxious. Ra’s barge should have been here by now, but there was no sign of it. The darkness around us felt heavy, almost suffocating, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched. I looked over at Austin, who kept glancing around, and he seemed just as uneasy as the rest of us.

Tory seemed to be the most affected by Duat. There was something here, something in the air maybe, or the ground, that seemed to weigh her down and make her constantly tired. She had fed well at the Hall of Ma’at, but I got the feeling she was hungry again and didn’t want to ask. I was about to offer myself when Austin stood up and brushed the sand off his trousers.

“Right, enough of this. Zayn, Jack, I want a perimeter guard established a hundred meters out. Keep it quiet. If you see anything, light your phones up and wave.”

I nodded, glad for the excuse to get to my feet and move around a bit. The three of us spread out, keeping each other in sight. I pulled my gun out. There was no sign of anything, but it felt good just to feel that familiar, reassuring weight in my hand. I saw a dim grey flash and realised Zayn had picked up his khopesh, probably for the same reason.

I slowly walked farther out into the dark sands. A strong breeze blew over the desert, tossing grains about in a mini tornado. I watched as it moved in front of me, dancing on the surface. With my eyes still on the ground, I saw the top level of sand shift, vibrating, a moment before I felt the rumble that seemed to come from deep underground. It almost felt like an earthquake, but not strong enough to knock me off balance.

The wind dropped, just for a moment, and I froze as I caught another sound in the distance. It was barely audible, but it sent a shiver down my spine. I looked around and saw the glow of two phones out in the darkness.
