CHAPTER 17

“Are you okay?” Jack said, as they drove out of town toward his house. “What happened? Where were you going?”

He didn’t want to be angry with her. He could see she was flustered enough.

He knew what it was like to be cooped up when on the mend, but to have no idea who you were? He could only imagine.

“I’m fine, or sort of fine,” she quickly said, looking down at her hands in her lap as they doubled back on the path she had taken. “I didn’t mean to make trouble. I just thought if I went to the alley where you found me, maybe it would help. Maybe I would finally remember something.”

“You could have told me. It wasn’t super awesome to hear it from my Alpha.”

“That’s like your boss, right?”

“Basically,” he replied. But as much as her question and apparent familiarity with shifter ways intrigued him, it was not enough to distract him from what had just happened.

He still felt he was missing something, so he continued. “And what was going on back there? Bloom and the girls looked... I don’t know. Strange. Concerned maybe?”

“I’m sorry, Jack. Can we maybe talk about it later?” she said as she brought her hands to her temples. “It’s been a long day already.”

He noticed she looked pretty upset. More than he had initially realized. “Okay, okay, hey just relax babe,” he said, reaching for her across the front seats. But she seemed to flinch again, so he pulled his hand back.

Patience Jack. Patience.

He continued. “Look maybe in a few days, when things calm down around here, I can take you over. If things calm down,” he said, trying his best to reassure her.

“I’m sorry, Jack. I shouldn’t have gone off like that.”

Jack felt his wolf whining.

But at the moment, he didn’t have time for it.

“I can’t protect you if you run off like that,” he said, maybe with a little more edge on his voice than intended. But she had scared him. He couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to her.

He was also aware that Dax was doing his best to give him some leeway where she was concerned, but everyone had their limits. Thankfully, everything was okay.

Nina is safe. Now to make sure we have things wrapped up with that kid.

Without another word, he pulled out his phone.

He couldn’t afford anymore screw ups or Dax might just start asserting his alpha dominance.

He scrolled to the number he wanted and pressed dial.

“Clint, what’s the status?”

“Not great, man. Kid is fine but still stuck in there.”

“Dammit. I can’t believe this one guy has us all tied up like this.”

“The way I see it, we have two problems. We got a kid in trouble, and we have what is almost certainly another case of this contagion thing,” Clint replied.

“I don’t get why they are calling it a contagion. From what Joanna said and the little I have gathered from our meetings, we don’t even know how it is spreading,” Jack opined.

“People are getting it somehow, though.
