Chapter 7

Why couldn't they hear her? Lexa's lips moved, but her voice didn't seem to reach her own ears. It was as though she screamed but no sound came out, a nightmare that had come true.

She would die in the trunk of the stupid police car.

Again, she tried to scream, to move her hands, but they were so cold. She felt numb; her extremities ached and burned. She'd lost count how long she'd been in the trunk of the vehicle. Her head hurt. Mr. Jennings hadn't let her out, and though she had tried screaming for the first hour or two, no one had heard her cries for help. She'd given up when her throat went raw.

Tears burned her eyes, mixing with the icy water seeping into the trunk, curling around her, mixing with her tears. She'd cried a lot, worried about Asher, remembering that the last time she'd seen him, he'd been shot. She prayed he hadn't died and that someone had been at the club to find him and call for help.

Now, though, even with all the commotion, she thought she could hear Asher's voice, or maybe she had been hallucinating and no one was coming for her at all?

A soft click from above sent a shiver through her body.

The latch clicked.

Another officer popped the lid of the trunk.

Inside the trunk of the vehicle, Lexa lay motionless. She tried to speak, to move, to sit up, but her body betrayed her. The only slight movements she thought existed were the unstoppable shivers that coursed through her as she trembled wordlessly against the rough, carpeted floorboards of the trunk.

Asher's hand came down and two fingers grazed her neck, holding against her pulse for a minute before he lifted her into his arms.

"Her pulse is weak," he said.

Who was he talking to? Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his neck. Well, she attempted to hold him against her. Every movement took far more energy than she had in reserve. She was soaked and shivering, the scene all too familiar, but at least she was alive, and so was he. "Asher," she whispered, the strength of a single word exhausting. Never in her life, had she felt so tired, so ready for sleep.

"Stay with me," Asher said.

Where would she go? She shivered. Her body felt like it wasn't her own, the chill burning and stinging her skin.

Her eyes closed. Keeping them open was a struggle. In the distance, the wail of sirens grew louder. Were they coming for her?

She felt bumpy movements as Asher carried her across the path. Where were they going? She would have asked if she had the energy, but she just wanted to sleep.

"Lexa. Stay with me." His voice was loud and abrupt, right in her ear.

She struggled to keep her eyes open. "Tired," she mumbled to him. She shifted her head slightly, feeling the strength and warmth of his chest against her cheek. "You were shot." It was a question, though the words were strung out
