Chapter Nine

McKenna wasn’t drunk. Brodie was certain of that. But something had broken free after she’d faced off with Shandra Garner, and she seemed remarkably relaxed, despite getting them kicked out of Grey’s and Brodie kissing her in a crowded bar.

Okay...it hadn’t been much of a kiss. More like a taste. But her lips had softened the instant he’d touched them, and he’d raised his head before he gave in to the temptation to deepen the kiss, or better yet, to escort her out into the shadows of the parking lot and demonstrate the effect she had on him.

Brodie’s groin tightened as he exhaled, his breath a long, slow stream.

That wasn’t going to happen, but when she bumped against him as she laughed at another of Leo’s stories, he slid his arm around her to steady her. She smiled up at him, her expression shifting as she met his gaze with a laughing look. She felt it, too, and she wasn’t backing off.

And that could mean trouble for both of them.

Brodie slid his arm free and put his elbow back on the bar as he studied his drink, taking a moment to collect himself. Leo hailed the bartender, Izzy hugged someone she knew. People moved behind him, working their way to an open place at the bar to order, laughter pressing in on his ears. He was surrounded by people going about their evening-fun business, but he was very much an island as he considered the circumstances he was in the process of creating. He probably wasn’t the only guy in the room working through a woman issue in his head, but that didn’t make matters any easier. What in the hell had he been thinking?

“What happens in FlintWorks stays in FlintWorks.” McKenna’s lowly spoken words broke through his concentration, startling him, and he half turned to frown down at her, wondering if he’d heard her correctly. She raised her eyebrows, telling him he had, then made a show of glancing past him at Leo and Izzy, now in conversation with another couple, before meeting his eyes again. “Tonight is tonight,” she said simply. “Not a promise of something more.”

Okay, then.

“So if I kissed you again?”

She gave a try-it-and-let’s-see shrug that all but dared him to test the theory.

Not being made of stone, he met the challenge, leaning in to touch her soft lips again, wondering where the night was taking him—then his head jerked up as Leo clapped him on the shoulder. He turned to see his friend staring at him round-eyed.

“Whoa. Hey. I didn’t see what was happening.” Leo cleared his throat. “Carry on.”

“I think the moment is gone,” Brodie said dryly, wishing like hell that he hadn’t accepted McKenna’s silent challenge.

“Sorry,” Leo muttered, turning back to Izzy, whose expression was both stunned and...could it be...encouraging? She gave McKenna one of those secret-message women looks, then turned to smile at the bartender as he delivered her drink.

“Guess I lost my mind for a moment,” McKenna murmured from where she stood at his elbow.
