Rocky stomped down the stairs. Her eyes burned with unshed tears and she hastily wiped them away before they could stain her heated cheeks. She was an adult damnit. Crying over someone hurting her feelings was not what adults did.

Besides, what did you think would happen? You knew Georgia still saw you as a little kid.

The thought made her feel even worse and she paused on the bottom step not sure what to do. There was nowhere to go to escape her pain and embarrassment and it was that thought that had her dropping down on the step like she used to when she was a teen. She hid her face in her hands ignoring the bits of glitter and tape that had stuck to them. She sniffled softly trying to force back the rest of her tears.

God. How could I have been so stupid as to think she would want me. It was the way Georgia had looked at her that had convinced her that maybe her feelings weren’t one-sided, but clearly Rocky was just kidding herself.

She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn’t hear her mom walk by.

“Rocky? Honey, are you okay?”

Rocky jumped up and turned around hoping that her mom didn’t see the tears she hadn’t managed to catch. Great. Now on top of fighting with Georgia, I have to ruin Christmas with my wayward feelings.

“Oh, yeah. I’m okay.” Her voice was wobbly but there was nothing she could do about that now. “Just having a moment. You know how that is.” A glance over her shoulder let her know that her mom was not quite reassured by her words.

“Right,” her mom said eyeballing her with a knowing expression. “I think maybe you and I should have a little talk.”

Those were never words that Rocky wanted to hear, but when her mom reached out and gripped her hand, she followed her without a fight. Deep down, she wanted to talk about this with someone. Maybe saying all of this out loud would be the kick she needed to finally move on and make her long-standing crush a thing of the past. There was no sense in pining over someone who didn’t want to be with you.

They walked down the hallway everything silent beyond the creaking floorboards below their feet. Her mom gestured for Rocky to sit on the bed and closed the door behind them.

“Now,” she began turning towards Rocky. “Tell me why I walked by and saw the light of my life crying on the stairs?”

“Mom…” Rocky trailed off trying to figure out the best way to word her confession. She sighed and decided to just get it over with. She could try to make something up, but her mom would no doubt see right through any of her attempts to bullshit a response.

“I like Georgia.”

Her mom smiled as she walked over and sat down on the bed beside her. “I know sweetie. You’ve always liked her. When you were a kid, you would follow Georgia and Jasmia around like the littlest shadow.
