Chapter 18

Mad Dog

Anticipating that Ava would be up before the sun, I made sure we didn’t stay out until all hours.

That decision proved to be a wise one.

When I heard her bedroom open, I sprang out of bed and yanked on a pair of jeans.

I headed straight for the coffee pot. “Morning.”

Her cheeks flushed, but she smiled. “Hi. I can make that for you.”

“I’ve been making my own coffee for ten years. I can do this. When are you leaving for the main house?”

“I usually have a cup of coffee, then eat something small before I head over. Cooking on an empty stomach makes me grumpy.”

“Thanks for the warning.”

Soft laughter filled the kitchen.

That alone was enough reward for being out of bed this early.

She touched my arm, then pulled her hand away. “I was going to scramble eggs. Want some?”

“Please.” I pulled mugs out of the cabinet and fixed her coffee just how she liked it.

She glanced over her shoulder at me, but she wasn’t looking at my face. “I’m surprised you’re up this early.”

I set a mug on the counter next to her and kissed her cheek. “You and me both. Mind if I tag along to breakfast?”

“You’re always welcome to come.” She lifted two plates out of the cabinet. “I had fun last night. Dinner and the drive.”

“I did too. You free next weekend?”

“I’ll put in a few extra hours this week to clear my weekend. After last week, I’m sure there are massive amounts of laundry waiting for me.”

We sat at the table. I would live in a constant state of exhaustion by getting up with her every morning, but if our mornings were all like this, I could get used to this new normal.

I downed my coffee, then refilled the cup. “Have you considered Beau’s offer to hire another person? Someone to clean.”

“I should.”

“Think about it.” I poured the second cup of coffee down my throat, hoping the caffeine would kick in soon.

Once we finished breakfast, I cleared the table. “I’ll get this cleaned up and meet you at the main house in a bit.”

“Thanks.” In a bold move for my bride, she hugged me. “Don’t forget to put on a shirt.”

Before I could think of something clever to say in response, she picked up her keys and walked out the door.

That hug was one more good thing about getting up early.

After cleaning the kitchen and taking a quick shower, I walked to the main house. Instead of shorts and tennis shoes, I opted for jeans and boots. That was the required uniform on a ranch.

The room was full of ranch hands when I arrived. Some were seated at the table, already eating; others were at the counter, getting food.

Ava waved me over. “I set some bacon aside for you. I didn’t want the boys to eat it all before you got here.” She nodded toward the table. “Mason could probably eat half of it on his own.”

“I don’t doubt that. And thank you.” I picked up the plate and loaded it with pancakes.
