I tear through the streets of Hell, winding my way past the usual bars and dives that I gather information from, and further, to the rough side of town.

I barely know what kind of beasties live here. I only know I don't want to fuck with them.

A sentiment that is enforced the second I walk through the door and roughly ten sets of eyes fix on me and blaze with white-hot power.

Well. I had planned to do this my usual way… Buy a few rounds, dig a little deeper with each new drink.

But sometimes it's better to just go for the throat.

I let the lazy, arrogant grin spread across my face, and even as a distant part of me arcs up, agitated, begging my shifter soul to stay hidden…

Another part of me—a stronger part of me—loves this. Loves what I'm about to do.

“So,” I say lazily. “Which one of you ugly bastards can tell me where the Rising Snakes’”—I make sure to twist the words like a grimace in my mouth—“stronghold is?” I pause for emphasis, and then I bark. “Well?”

Several demons snap to attention, responding automatically to an alpha’s bark.

The rest rise up in fury, and it's on. No bouncer’s gonna throw me out this time. No one gives a flying fuck what we do here, and it's exhilarating.

I give as good as I get, taking down demons around me, and even though I end up on my back a few times, pinned beneath the weight of an impossibly sized monster, it's clear who’s coming out on top.

It's clear who’s the alpha.

It's a fucking terrifying thought, and I don't know what's come over me.

That's not true. I know exactly what's come over me, and her name is Helena.

She has beautiful, deep brown eyes that make me think of Creedence Clearwater. And she makes the most exquisite sounds when you take her apart.

She's my soulmate, my lover, and it's my duty to protect her.

A duty I swore I would never fall hostage to again.

It seems Fate had other plans.

I flip the nearest demon over with my thighs and catch him in a stronghold, my arm twisting around his neck.

“This will all be over, buddy,” I tell him, “If you just tell me what I want to know.”

“River’s Mouth,” he chokes out. “Near River’s Mouth, that’s all I know. Please.”

I let him go, and the force of his desperate attempts to escape mean he thumps his head straight down on the floor and passes out.

Oops.

I stand up, dusting my hands off, and punch an approaching demon right in the face.

“I’m off then, lads,” I say, and I escape back to my bike before they can catch me.

My heart feels somewhat lighter with the exhilaration of the fight still thrumming in my veins.

Even if perhaps I have no answers for myself, yet, I have the ones I came looking for. And that will do for now.
