Chapter Ten

The second the cool night air kissed her face, Sera felt she could breathe. Her skin hadn’t stopped humming, and her legs didn’t feel entirely stable, but without the walls of the break room closing in on her, the sensation of suffocation waned.

Ever since finding the note attached to her door, Sera had been making up her plan as she went. It seemed so long ago right then—standing on the front porch of the house that she’d foolishly let herself believe was hers. Blinking dumbly at the scribbled note and realizing that at no time during her years in the role of Colin’s best friend had she really given thought to how she would handle the day when everything fell apart. And even if the choices she’d made had been a little suspect, she’d known the destination and the general direction well enough to improvise when the unexpected occurred.

Now, for the first time, Sera didn’t know what to do. What she wanted to do and what she was supposed to do had always been clear to her, even if the outcomes disagreed. But with the cooling night air caressing her cheeks, mental exhaustion weighing down her shoulders, she saw that the forked road had another prong.

What she should do.

The fact remained that no matter how well she knew her role, the thought of never seeing Colin again redefined her understanding of pain.

There was also the fear—the fear that she was on the cusp of making the wrong decision. That there was no right decision. Either she lost Colin or she lost something she didn’t know if she could function without.

Sera swallowed hard and released a slow, trembling breath. Fear was a powerful motivator. Over the eons, she’d witnessed its cancerous influence coax humans into doing some truly appalling things while keeping others in place when moving might have saved their lives. The world alone could feel overwhelming in its size, and even more so in its isolation. Going through eternity with no tether would drive a person mad—feeling completely disconnected from the celestial heavens or the ground itself. Whether any of the angels who had Fallen previously had reasons beyond apathy to sever ties, Sera didn’t know. She couldn’t imagine taking that leap without someone like Colin waiting for her.

But she did have Colin. For the moment, he was all hers, as was the choice itself. If she moved forward with him, if she trusted that together they could make an eternity out of it, Sera couldn’t imagine feeling any great loss from telling Camael to stuff it once and for all. In truth, she’d never relied on Heaven for more than mental reassurance that she had backup if she ever needed it.

In all time, she’d never felt connected to anything.

Except Colin.

Understanding crashed through her system with all the subtly of a lightning bolt. Then, Sera knew. She knew beyond doubt or reason—she knew on faith itself—that if she let Camael or whoever take Colin away from her tomorrow, every day thereafter would be a study of pain and regret.
