When locked in a room with two invisible people dead set on murdering you, my first tip is to run for the smashed window. Ideally, clear the path between you and the window, but if the assailants are invisible you might end up like me.

"Son of a five-titted bitch!" I swore, spinning blindly away and slamming my palm over another slash on my stomach. Blood soaked down my side, staining my clothes, but they were shallow cuts designed to inflict pain, not slow me down. The twins were definitely psychopaths.

"Come out, come out, psychos," I sang, turning, trying to sense a disturbance in the air at the same time I grasped my magic.

I expected to feel the heat and rush of blood in two bodies but instead I felt … nothing. Not like when I was attacked by an invincible woman in my flat; I didn’t hit a block, there was just nothing there.

The core where my magic normally sat was empty.

I was powerless.

Air puffed out of me in a shallow gasp, my chest tightening. How was I supposed to win a fight against two invisible attackers with no magic?

Don't, I reminded myself.

I spun to the window, slashing the space in front of myself as I moved, slamming my wings down to propel myself faster. Paranoia made my skin tingle as I waited for another blow.

A low laugh warned me of another blow. I dropped to the floor with a grunt, flattening myself to the bare floorboards. Air shifted above me, and I used it to place the twin who'd tried to stab me again. Rolling onto my back, wings pinned uncomfortably, I slammed my booted feet into a solid body. Ha! The air flickered, Bevan's body visible for a moment. I adjusted my angle and slammed my heavy soles into his dick, dropping him to the floor with a screech. Fun.

Bria could have been anywhere, hidden by her magic, watching me. The awareness made my breathing short as I shot to my feet and dove for the window.

My skin prickled, little hairs standing on end. I made it two feet, then four.

I slashed my knife in front of me, clearing my path. Five feet.

Bria didn't laugh like Bevan had. She hooked her arm around my neck with no warning, and I screamed in surprise and frustration as she pressed mercilessly on my windpipe.

"Dick," I choked out with my last remaining air.1

She had my throat pinned, but there was nothing to stop me driving my knife down into her thigh, so I did, over and over. The muffled scream she let out was satisfying, even if it was right by my ear and drowned my hearing in sharp ringing.

Her grip weakened. Promising. I slashed up in an awkward motion that strained my muscles, but I managed to carve my dagger through her forearm. I earned a splash of blood on my chin and a howl of rage in my ear.

I gritted my teeth and tore her forearm from my neck while she was distracted.
