Chapter 9: VINCENT

Vincent stared out the tinted window of the armored SUV, glowering at the standstill traffic outside on Highway 101. It was still early enough in the night that there were plenty of humans on the move, and it just so happened that their meeting with Aamon fell on a Saturday, of all days.

The incremental traffic and taut silence in the back of the car made the weight of what they’d learned even heavier.

Abigail sat beside him, her gaze burning a dull hole into the floor. She hadn’t looked anywhere else for the past five minutes.

“If this prophecy is true,” he eventually began, “This changes the scope of things. Drastically. My plans were always quite ambitious in their scale, but this would be far more than I ever anticipated. Corralling all of vampire society to behave doesn’t quite hold a candle to an apocalypse.”

A dull noise of dry amusement huffed out of her, her head shaking slowly.

“It can’t be true. We can’t be the reason the world might end.”

He looked over at her, his mouth drawing taut.

“We won’t be. Even if there is some prophecy, it is not set in stone. It is a highly informed prediction. There is no way to know the outcome of everything for certain. Aamon himself said it. Or at least, that’s what I gathered.”

“He seemed more senile to me than anything. Are all demons like that?”

“No. For instance, the one that set up our meeting with him is quite grounded. Though, she does have her moments. But, true demons are a different breed. Though, apparently not that different, according to Aamon,” he mused.

“I still don’t believe that angels and demons are ultimately the same.”

Vincent’s expression twisted in thoughtful focus.

“No, I can understand that. How else would Çelik have been able to use powers like angels, only in a more twisted manner?”

“But Çelik isn’t—wasn’t a true demon.”

“No, but a vampire is still a demonic creature. He was able to stop you from scrying, he was able to scry for himself, and he had been able to command you. Perhaps he had learned a similar sort of change from another demon.”

“I hardly think there was someone who would love him enough to pull off this blood ritual Aamon gave us,” Abigail retorted reflexively.

The sudden uncomfortable silence and her looking away after made the atmosphere awkward, to say the least.

It was quite the elephant in the room. Both of them had seen the workings of the ritual, and knew the requisite of love, this doomed love Aamon had gone on and on about.

Neither of them had quite addressed their situation from that angle. And now that there was the possibility that such affections would doom the world, it made it even more difficult to approach. Vincent felt a tangle in his chest, his plans fissured and fractured by this epiphany. But, he couldn’t let it shake him, at least enough for those around him to tell. They were all relying on him to be invincible, unstoppable, a fixed point of strength they could all rally around.
