Chapter 16

Early the next morning, while the streetlamps were still on, Acubens and I set out for the demonology library.

“Thanks,” I said. “For helping with Darshan’s training.”

He waved a hand dismissively. “No problem. I don’t want to see him killed either. I’d probably fail Inscription Magic without him.”

He sighed. “And to tell the truth, I kind of admire his guts. Can you imagine willingly get involved in Great House politics. As absolutely insufferable as Arcturus is, I’m grateful every day that he’s the heir and not me.”

“What, even with…” I gestured vaguely, trying to encompass Arcturus’s massive control freak tendencies.

“Oh, it’s only going to get worse,” Acubens grumbled. “When my father finally kicks the bucket, he’ll become Lord Nightfeld, and I’ll have to swear loyalty to him.” We both shuddered at the idea. “But he was made for the position, and I’m not. When he was ten, he was out-debating my parents at House policy. When I was ten, I liked to design cool outfits for the family dogs and make them act out stories. When he was fifteen, he was running a Great House and personally directing raids on the Stonehavens. When I was fifteen, I finally realized that he was lying probably every time he’d ever said he got his injuries from ‘training practice.’ I leave House business to him, because honestly, if there’s anything even he can’t do, then I sure can’t do it either.”

“I think you don’t give yourself enough credit,” I said. “If you’re not much of a player of politics, it’s not like he ever gave you the chance to learn. You’re ridiculously good at any skill that interests you, including skills that he doesn’t have.”

Acubens looked pleased at that. “I wouldn’t trade having an actual sense of fashion for anything.” He gave me a heavy-lidded smirk. “Or my girlfriend-having skills.”

They were extremely distracting, all right. “I’m just going to remind you that we have a lot of homework to catch up on, thanks to all our extracurricular business,” I said, elbowing him. “But I’ll admit I’ve been scoping out supply closets in the building.”

“Oh, good,” he said, as we turned the corner, coming to the Redbriar Center for Demonology.

Using the demonology library as our new place for study killed two birds with one stone. It was built along the same ambitious lines as the rest of the Redbriar Center for Demonology, which meant it was too big for the number of students actually taking demonology, which meant it was a very pleasant, quiet place for doing homework, especially this early in the day. Its glass front provided a clear view of the building entrances, allowing us to keep watch from where we sat.

And it also let us look in from the outside.

“Oh shit, that’s him,” I said, stumbling midstep, even as Wraith walked up next to us.

Acubens narrowed his eyes. “Wait, the blond guy? Are you sure?”

“I’d know him anywhere,” I said wearily.

He was standing next to a shelf, pretending to read a book.
