Charlotte stood barefoot in the cramped kitchen of one of the many rooms in the fae’s underground bunker. She grabbed a cup from the cupboard after setting a pot of water to boil when she heard rustling coming from the couch. She peeked over her shoulder to see Sky sitting up, watching her with a lopsided smirk.

“Feeling better?”

“Like a million dollars. That is, if a million dollars was run over by a truck and set on fire first,” he answered. Charlotte walked over to the couch and sat on the edge.

“What were you thinking? You could have died,” she scolded with an edge of sadness.

“But I didn’t, thanks to you.”

“I guess we’re even now?” Charlotte teased, nudging him with her elbow. He laughed and sat up more, propping himself up on the back of the couch as he swung his legs over the side.

“We’re even.”

“Seriously though, you almost died saving me for the bajillionth time. You’ve gotta stop doing that.” She stared, getting lost in his eyes. She didn’t know what she would have done if he had died. She barely knew him, but at the same time, never felt so connected to someone in her life.

“Are you feeling better?” He cocked a blond brow as he studied her.

“Why would you ask about me? You’re the one who almost died.”

“Because using magic always has a price. We don’t know where your magic has originated from, and the effects can be quite… unpleasant.”

“I’m fine.” Liar.

“You pulled from a lei line, Charlie. How did you know to do that?” Sky questioned, his eyes swimming with a mix of gray and red.

“Honestly? I have no idea. I just felt something calling to me.”

“Just try to be careful and learn your limits. You saw those witches. If you’re not cautious, the darkness will pull you in. The price you pay every time you tap into something dark, is your soul,” he warned.

Her eyes fixated on him as he spoke. The color in his face was still drained and hadn’t returned completely, while his eyes seemed lighter than usual. Instead of their usual electricity they seemed glass-like, with more of a grayish blue hue.

“You’re staring,” he noted with a smirk. Her cheeks instantly flooded with heat. Charlotte paused for a moment trying to find what to say to him, but figured the truth was probably the only thing that made any sense.

“I’ve never seen eyes like yours before,” she said with hesitance.

“Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?”

“I’m not sure,” she admitted, chewing her bottom lip.

“It’s probably because I’m fae,” Sky answered as he shifted back and kicked his feet up on the coffee table. He draped his arm on the back of the couch and his proximity made her heart jump.

“The fae from tonight were all so different, but none had eyes like yours,” she pointed out, her voice shaking as she watched his eyes burrow into hers.

“It’s heritage; Blood, Light, Dark, Lupin. We all have a different skill set and lineage traits,” he explained with a look designed to make any woman swoon.
