The gargoyle—or Atticus, as the bookshop owner calls him—does indeed put me to work. By the time we’re done hauling the books across Themis, onto the funicular, and then into the underground library at Pandorax Academy, I’m ready to collapse and never get up.

And that’s after Atticus takes over half my load when my knees start to buckle halfway through the journey.

“Well done,” he says grudgingly, when we finally dump the lot onto a table in the library. “I didn’t think we’d make it without having to call for reinforcements, but we did. Brava.”

I nod and use my scarf to wipe away the sweat coating my brow. I’ve given up on trying to hide my ugly face by now. It just doesn’t seem worth the effort.

No one’s paid the slightest bit of attention to me when we’d arrived at Pandorax. It felt weird, but it makes sense. The servants had been practically invisible to me too, when I’d walked the halls as a student.

“Well, class will have started by now so you should head back to your duties soon,” Atticus says as he starts cataloging the new books. “Though who knows if the Horsemen have returned. I heard they left in the middle of the night for some mission or other. Either way, you should head off if you don’t want to get into trouble.”

Some mission. Hmph. They couldn’t even rescue the right person!

Atticus raises a brow at my scowl. “What are you waiting for, hmm?”

“Nothing,” I mutter, then hurry out of my chair and head to the door.
