Chapter 14: Heaven
We stay out until the sun starts to rise. This time, I have no blanket to cover me on my way to my room, only my ripped up shirt that I tie around my waist. But I donât feel like its a Walk of Shame, even though thereâs grass stains on my knees and the smell of sex hangs in the air around me. No, I donât feel any shame or fear at all.
Not with Malek escorting me all the way to my door.
âDoes this mean youâll stop threatening me?â I ask as he bends down to kiss me in front of it. Malek regards me solemnly, his eyes softer and yet more troubled than theyâve ever been.
âI still think you should leave,â he says. âAs Horsemen, our lives donât belong to us. Sometimes, weâre called on to do terrible things⦠things that no one should have to do. And yet, we do it because we have to, because our deeds are ordained.â
âAnd because Iâm part-angelâ¦â
âYouâll have to choose. Horsemen arenât meant to love anyone. Everyone is dispensable. When the time comes, youâll either stand with the angels⦠or youâll Fall to be with us. And even then⦠we might have to betray you ourselves if you stand in our way.â
âBut Iâm not even going to try to receive Grace,â I frown, overwhelmed. I hadnât even mentioned love⦠but the fact that Malek did, makes something hard and cold start to melt, deep inside of me. "I canât Fall. Thereâs no need to worry at all.â
Malek just looks at me like he knows something I donât. âJust trust me. Itâs for your own good if you get as far away as you can from us.â
He turns to leave and I catch his hand, pulling him back.
âYou canât possibly justify all the crap the Four of you have pulled by saying itâs for my own good,â I say scornfully, purposely making my voice harsh. Even though Iâve started to see them in a new light, I wonât ever forget what they did to me.
âOf course not,â he replies. âI canât speak for everything the others did, only for myself. But who wants to crave what they canât have? If you go, itâll be easier on all of us.â
He yanks his hand from mine and starts walking away.
I frown darkly as he strides down the hall. âYou canât tell me what to do you know,â I call out after him. âIn the end, I have free will, even if you think you donât. And if I choose to stay, Iâll stay.â
He doesnât turn back and just keeps walking down the deserted corridor. Once heâs gone, I turn to enter my room, scrambling for my keys in my too-tiny skirt pocket.
The sound of clapping reaches my ears and I turn to my other side.
Itâs Christian, lounging against the door jam of a room down the hall.
âI see youâve ticked off another Horseman from your list,â he drawls. âYouâre just a regular slut now, arenât you? Nothing special at all.
