Heaven on Earth?
Sometimes I wonder if we forget that earth can occasionally be like ‘a little piece of heaven’ too. Feeling a bit down recently, my husband, John, suggested we both go for a walk on a nearby beach. Gwithian beach in Cornwall is miles of golden, uninterrupted sand but as we arrived the wind was blowing so strongly I almost changed my mind. Wearing a scarf round my head, a hat and a hood, along with sunglasses to protect my eyes, we walked down the cliff steps and on to the sand. The sand was blowing across the beach like a sandstorm in the desert but it was surprisingly beautiful. The cliffs were actually protecting most of the beach from the high winds and our walk was simply breathtaking as the waves crashed up on to the shore. Almost immediately the sun began to shine. At the other end of the beach, a perfect rainbow emerged from the light cloudy sky. It arched artistically over the top of the lighthouse and John managed to capture the rainbow on his mobile phone.
After walking back up to the car we sat drinking out of a flask and looking out over the sea below. Moments later a group of wild ponies appeared and I jumped back out of the car to take a photograph on my mobile phone … Taking photographs is such a fantastic way of zoning in on an object of beauty – it really makes you concentrate on the picture before you.
Feeling rather magical, we drove back to town to pick up some supplies. Walking along the high street I could hear a lot of splashing water and looked up. A blackbird was taking a bath in a length of drainpipe running along the top of one of the buildings. I walked all the way to the car with a big smile on my face. What an uplifting day!
When I finally depart earth for heaven I hope I remember special moments like this. I know it’s a cliché but a newborn baby, spring flowers or even a sunset – these are moments to treasure. Sadly, following the loss of a close relation, some people become so frightened of dying themselves that they forget to LIVE. This is a regular message from folk on the other side of life. They remind us, ‘I know I have died but I want you to carry on. Enjoy your life … I’ll be waiting for you in the future but, for now, make the most of every single moment.’ We really must.
