Steven dropped him off at his apartment building. Adam struggled to part with him, knowing what he was about to do. It wasn’t like the lies he had been fabricating for years were any smaller than the one he was spinning right now, but it was the first between Steven and him that concerned their work. That’s why he had never wanted a partner. Not because he was too particular about how he did things, but because he didn’t want to be accountable to anyone but himself.

He had the feeling Steven was scrutinizing his every move. His car was back parked in its usual place, but Hannah’s car was nowhere to be seen and that wasn’t good news at all. He would have to deal with it another time. Steven deciphered his thoughts and volunteered, “I’ll come pick you up tomorrow morning.”

“Thank you.” He made a move to exit the vehicle, but Steven grabbed him by the arm briefly and the touch startled him. He froze, too scared to face him.

“Adam -”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” he rushed out, reluctantly freeing himself from his grasp.

Steven didn’t drive off right away. His car was still there when Adam glanced out of the dark windows of his bedroom minutes later.
