Chapter Nine

Indigo

I liked the way Ryker made me feel, how his touch brought me so much pleasure. I had vague memories of sex from Carrie, but they were nowhere near as powerful as this. What I didn’t like was the way Ryker kept trying to deny me. I knew he wanted me as much as I wanted him. My AI confirmed his elevated heart rate, dilated pupils, and flushed skin.

“This can’t keep happening,” he muttered, doing his pants back up.

“You like it,” I pointed out, pulling my own clothes on and returning to my seat. My coffee was still warm. I took a sip.

“I feel like I’m taking advantage of you.”

It was the second time he’d said such a thing, and I bristled. “I’m an adult who makes her own choices. If I wish to have sex with you, I will.”

“But you don’t make your own choices. You’re programmed. Your free will has been taken from you.”

“Are you saying they programmed me to have sex with you?” I scoffed. “What, get you into bed, then kill you? I don’t think so, Ryker.” I studied him. “Are you afraid of me?”

His head shot up and he frowned at me. “No! Not at all.”

“Then there’s nothing to worry about, is there? I like having sex with you. You like having sex with me. We should have sex frequently.” My logic was sound. I was confident in my analysis. We would definitely be having more sex. Now that he’d awakened my desires—now that I’d had a taste of him—I wanted more. A lot more.

“You want me to come back to your place? So you can study my programming?” I asked, changing the subject.

“I do want to take you somewhere, but not to my…home.” His pause was telling.

“Where then?”

“I can’t tell you. Not yet. Until I fully sever your connection with the Institute, I can’t put myself and the others at risk.”

“The others?”

“Other android hybrids I’ve freed from the Institute’s influence.”

I was confused. “They live with you?”

“No. Look, you’re not going to like this, but I need to blindfold you.”

“I can’t ride my bike blindfolded.”

“No. You can’t.”

“You want me to leave my bike here?”

He nodded. He knew it was a lot to ask. To put my trust in him, leave my only means of transportation behind and let him take me, blindfolded, to some secret location where he could tinker with my brain.

“Okay.”

I saw the surprise flash across his face and grinned. I could feel Carrie inside me, pleased. She wanted to live again. The question was, would I lose myself—Indigo—in the process? And what of the bomb? We had no data, no knowledge of what would trigger it, nor what the consequences would be and how dangerous I really was. Hopefully, Ryker could provide the answers.

Standing outside in the fresh dawn air, I allowed him to blindfold me, then lead me to his car. Pulling the seatbelt across my body, his lips brushed my ear. “Okay?”

Goosebumps broke out on my skin. I turned my head, my lips landing on his.
