CHAPTER 32
A NEW DAWN, A NEW DAY
“These are the sort of things people ought to look at. Things without pretensions, satisfied to be merely themselves.”
— ALDOUS HUXLEY, THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION & HEAVEN AND HELL
"Celebrate your suffering & elevate your bliss."
— SHAMANA MA SHARENE
I CLOSED MY EYES again and rested more. The medicine was still strong in me even though the most vibrant visions had subsided. Chor’s snoring was strangely comforting; I could sense his presence there next to me even with my eyes closed. I felt a wave of gratitude for my love’s life, for his sleep, and even for his snoring.
When I opened my eyes again, I looked up to see Michael next to the remnants of the fire, smiling and moving about in what looked like a playful hybrid of tai chi and bird flight. Michael had stayed up all night to attend to us. This was part of his training. He had to be on his toes even through his desire to sleep. “Good morning!” he said with whispered exuberance. “Wow, I thought Moughenda snored bad! He’s the new champion!” Michael nodded toward Chor and giggled. Always an opportunity for laughter here, and, in truth, everywhere. Here we are facing a life-and-death struggle, and Michael had me cracking up.
Chor finally stirred. He took deep breaths and unfurled his strong limbs, stretching like a waking panther in his bed. His eyes fluttered open, and he looked out at the sky through reborn eyes. “Whoah,” he said. I cracked open my cocoon of blankets and sat up. Moughenda emerged from the guesthouse. He’d taken a short rest in the predawn hours. He stood observing Chor with a curious smile.
Despite the rigorous night, I emerged feeling profoundly exhilarated, content, and satiated. All was clear and luminous. My looking glass of perception seemed to have been dusted off, revealing the sparkling natural magic of the earth that had been there all along.
Chor moved to stand up. “You good, man?” asked Michael.
“Yes, yes. Thank you, brother.” He rose, explored his balance, and slowly walked out of the temple into the dawn light. He looked upward and opened up his powerful arms as if to encompass the sky. He took the deepest breath, drinking in the beauty. His gaze traversed the pristine tropical landscape. “Thank you for this day!” he exclaimed.
Chor turned toward Moughenda and Michael, who greeted him with the warm, knowing smiles of proud parents watching their child take their first steps. “I feel...AMAZING! I feel...so...much...LOVE!” Chor exclaimed, and then burst with a broad smile and joyous laugh. It was the first time in so long that I heard his authentic laugh.
“Thank you there, Moughenda! You beautiful African man! Thank you, Michael!” Chor hugged the men with plenty of slaps on the back, warrior style.
Chor looked over at me with bright, clear eyes. I could see his spirit behind his eyes again! I realized just how deeply it had been buried under the pollution. I struggled to rise. Michael sprinted to my aid.
