LISSA

The problem with pups who fall asleep in their dinner plates is that they rise in the night as vampires who pretend they’ve never heard of sleep. I sigh as Robbie dashes past me in wolf form. Clearly he’s not walking calmly with Gramma Shelley while she tells him a story.

Which means the force is strong in him tonight. He loves Shelley’s stories.

I pull my hoodie off over my head and hand it to Kennedy. “Mind carrying this for me? I have to go chase a vampire pup.”

She giggles, which is a really good sound. Today might have pushed on me in some very grown-up ways, but it let our kids absolutely be kids, even the ones who’ve had to grow up way too fast.

Kennedy carefully collects the rest of my clothes as I strip out of them. Old habits. A good one to keep in this case. A couple of truckloads of stuff from the thrift store mean our pack has more things to wear than we know what to do with, but that doesn’t mean we have to get reckless.

Besides, I really like that hoodie. Especially when it smells like Hayden.

I shiver as my wolf takes my skin, and it’s not from the night cold. My senses sharpen, and so does my need to act and stop listening to that annoying caution from my human.

I tell her to focus. We have a pup to track.

She snorts. Robbie is about as hard to find as a herd of elephants. He practically glows in the dark. Silly moon pup.

I grin as I run. White is definitely not a practical color for a wolf who wants to stay hidden. Already, I can see flashes of him in the trees ahead, and the shadow shapes of the much bigger, darker wolves who are tracking his gamboling run through the trees.

My wolf veers left. She’s fast. She’ll circle ahead of him and chase her silly boy back to Shelley and stories and pup piles. After she runs with him awhile first. He’s fast, just like she is, and his paws are getting bigger.

I chuckle. He’s trying to grow big and strong like his friend Reilly.

Her feet tap the earth, amused. Robbie’s going to be really surprised when he discovers he’s not a bear. Maybe Reilly will find his wolf instead. Some pups can shift to the animals of both their parents, and it’s safe to be a submissive wolf now.

My human heart aches at how deeply she believes that. It’s as true to her as the scent of the forest and her love for her silly moon pup.

I jump, clearing a nurse log that wasn’t there the last time I ran this way, and skirting a boulder that was. Then I angle back toward my pup—and cross a scent trail.

A fresh one.

Wolf.

Kenny.

Heading toward the den.

A warning.

My wolf flies, pushing every ounce of my panic into her feet.

A gray wolf joins my run, and I can feel his fierceness. Kel smelled the intruder too. We both head straight for the pups.
