CHAPTER 9

Prophecy and Evangelism

A New Spiritual Hunger

It is easy to notice a new spiritual hunger in people. Television shows talk openly about spiritual things, and psychics are now in plush offices and kiosks at malls. It is not unusual for a high school student to be part of a Wiccan coven, or to browse the occult section of a bookstore looking up spells and incantations. With this increase in occult and spiritual interest, questions must be asked: Why is this happening? Did dark spiritual forces suddenly invade the minds of people?

I believe it is God Himself who has planted this spiritual hunger, and people are now searching for understanding and spiritual fulfillment. They are suddenly being awakened to spirituality and turning to what is closest to them, or something they can identify with. Because many people have had a bad experience with Christianity or religion, they are not readily turning to a church for help.

They might be looking in the wrong directions, but the good news is that people are spiritually hungry and looking for an encounter with something real. God is setting up an amazing opportunity for us to offer supernatural encounters to people who are hungry for more.

A Gallup poll shows that 84 percent of Americans are interested in spirituality. But if you talk to these seekers, most of them find church and Christianity to be boring and irrelevant. We really need to do something!

I was one of the early forerunners in training and introducing people in the United States to prophetic evangelism. My wife and I planted several churches and trained outreach teams that have had positive results in reaching people with God’s love. I specialize in reaching people who are turned off by church, but still want an encounter with God. I made some interesting discoveries.

We Need a Paradigm Shift

God is doing something new. To have empowering encounters will require forgetting some former things we were taught and have been used to doing. Sadly, Christians today do not have the “eyes to see” that those older ways are not working to reach people for God. Instead, they are turning people off.

The old paradigm of sharing God’s love is actually based on a model that worked more than fifty years ago. People are changing, so we need to change the way we share the message of Jesus. Maybe you have heard people say, “I’m spiritual, but not religious,” or “That might be truth for you, but it’s not for me.” We need to listen to what they are saying, and gear our conversations and encounters based on their current beliefs.

We need to consider how to communicate with people so they can receive from us. Previously, people responded to program-oriented, pre-packaged ways of doing church. Nowadays, we need to be more organic, and our methods need to change based on the people we are interacting with at any given time.

A New Kind of Encounter

People often have a wall up when we try to talk with them about God, but there are things we can do to remove it.
