CHAPTER 16

Grant

I hate that I enjoyed slamming the door in her face. She makes it easy for me to be an ass. She gives the tiniest glimmer of hope, while taking whatever is left of my heart. Then walks away without looking back. Now that my heart is empty, I have just enough strength left to focus on the pack.

Doc stands there and looks past me to the door. “What’s on your mind, Grant?” A confused expression on his face.

I take a deep breath before I begin. “Alex is going to reject the mating bond. I need you to tell me everything I need to know about the insanity part. How long before it sets in? What will I notice first? What should I expect? I need to prepare the pack.”

Doc gasps. “What? Wait a minute. What do you mean she’s rejecting the bond? Did she say that?”

Doc looks like he’s been punched in the stomach. Why is he upset by this? I guess he would be upset about his daughter, but his reaction seems more vested somehow.

I’m trying to be levelheaded and remain calm. “No, not exactly. She’s said several times that she doesn’t want this and it’s not her life. She did ask if we could live apart. Which is something I won’t do. Either way, I need to be prepared. Have you ever known anyone who went through this?”

Doc falls into the chair by the desk, shaking his head in disbelief. “No. Are you sure she understands what denying it means? All of this is new to her, Grant. Don’t turn your back on her yet. Trust me. You have to give it more time.”

I stand tall, with my arms folded across my chest. “It’s tough, Doc. I see it in her eyes when I look at her. If she shifts today, she’ll be gone tomorrow. I’m not an alpha, Doc. I’m not strong enough to resist the pull. And I don’t know what to do about it.”

I hang my head and exhale. “It’s hard to comfort her but not touch her. Hold her without embracing her. Breathe in her scent without getting addicted to it. The whole time I’m trying not to touch her, she’s grabbing me and pulling me closer. Every time she breathes in my scent, she licks my neck. She doesn’t push me away until she’s taken what she needs.”

I raise my head and look Doc in the eye. “I told her what rejecting the bond means and she doesn’t care. Are you going to tell me what I need to know?”

I’m not backing down. I need to put the pack first and be prepared for what’s coming for them.

Doc shakes his head. “I’ll have to look into it. I’ve never even heard of anyone going through it. I’ll try to have something for you tomorrow.” He stands up, deflated.

I nod in his direction and turn to open the office door. “Thank you. Let’s go to the kitchen and have breakfast.”

I thought I would feel better saying it out loud.
