CHAPTER EIGHT

It was, all things considered, a Yule to remember.

Granted, the Yule log hadn’t been properly cured, so that the sap caught fire and the bloody thing more or less exploded when they lit it. Women were screaming, men were laughing, and young Jack kept trying to roast one of their precious parsnips on the ensuing conflagration.

And not one, but three of the wooden spoons went missing, and they found wee Angus and Hamish happily chewing on something ‘twas better left uninvestigated in the corner.

And apparently, the Duncans followed a holiday tradition he’d never heard of, which involved tying a ribbon to a cow’s horns and chasing it about, all the men trying to be the one to more-or-less tackle the beast and remove the ribbon… Only, the poor thing was crazed from terror, and as they chose to perform this tradition in the great hall, three benches and a table took the brunt of the mad cow.

Jennay managed to save the noon pottage, although her curses turned many an ear red, including Evander’s, and he’d spent his adult life surrounded by Drummond Kennedy’s Hunters.

So, all-in-all, aye, ‘twas a Yule to remember.

Besides, Evander spent it with Ysabel, and as far as he was concerned, ‘twas the first of many such celebrations they’d share. No matter what shenanigans ensued, he’d remember it as their first together.

By the time the evening arrived, most of the gathered Duncans were half-to-three-quarters-drunk—or in the case of Auld Jock, one-hundred-and-fifty-percent-drunk. The strange concoction he’d brewed in his barrels in the corner wasn’t ale, and definitely wasn’t old enough to be called whisky, but was absolutely alcoholic.

Even Evander was feeling a merry sort of glow as he sat with Ysabel on his lap in one of the large chairs he’d brought down from her chamber and set up near the hearth in the great hall.

A mug dangled from her fingers and her head lolled lightly, her hair hanging about her shoulders and her head encircled by a crown of holly that made her look every inch the queen.

The slightly tipsy queen, enjoying her people’s joy and joining in the celebration herself.

His fingers itched to claim her, to kiss her.

To taste her smile, to revel in her joy.

He’d done that to her, made her feel safe in her future, and couldn’t help but feel proud. Last night, he’d promised her his protection, and she’d been so at ease afterward. It hadn’t been a weak vow; he would protect her.

Because she was his, and she was innocent of Robertson’s charges.

The vellum scroll Drum had handed him, the one with the King’s seal, ordered her arrest and punishment for the crimes Robertson accused her of. But from the moment Evander had awakened with her in his arms, he’d known that arrest warrant hadn’t told the whole story.

The more time he spent with the Duncans, the more certain he became; Lady Ysabel wasn’t the criminal Robertson had made her out to be. She was trying hard to keep her clan together,
