The good book says, Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord. What it doesn't tell you is whose hand He will be dealing it from.

Neriah

Neriah stands under the spray of a hot shower, shivering. She cuddles her arms around herself while her teeth clatter. What has just happened? Why did she allow it? Veles was in control the entire time, and he knows what he’s doing. He knows what’s going on. She can’t blame him; she can only blame herself and the decisions she has made that led her to this spot so far. This constant flip-flopping between what is right and what’s wrong is in a thick gray area in her mind.

Sitting down on the shower floor, Neriah closes her eyes and leans her cheek on her huddled knees. Veles is a demon. He consumes people and souls. He’s in her command, and when this is finished, he tells her that she is his. What does that mean? Will he destroy her like he did John? She doesn’t feel bad for John, not after what she has suffered. She can only imagine that other girls have fared worse under his hand. The world is better without him.

An errant thought runs through her mind.

But who are you to make that decision? “God, help me.” Neriah whispers, lying down in the shower, the water pulsing against her side.

“Man is not so far from redemption, most of all you.” She hears Mark’s voice and raises her head slightly. “Are you alright?”

“Where are you?” Neriah asks, once again pressing her face against the cold stones.

“Here.” Mark appears, kneeling in front of the glass shower.

“How long have you been there?” She has gotten used to the feeling of demons around her, which she supposes isn’t the best thing.

Mark smiles, and his yellow eyes shine brighter. “Now, now, can’t tell you where I am all the time.”

“That means a while.” Neriah stands up and washes herself a second time before rinsing off.

As she opens the door to the shower, she realizes she isn’t shy about being naked in front of Mark. It comes naturally, especially since Veles has told her she is nothing to look at anyway. They’d seen it all and then some right? At least, she knows Titus has. Mark hands her a towel, his eyes moving over her body. Saying nothing, he sits on the bathroom counter, watching as she smoothes lotion over her skin before slipping on a sleeping shirt and panties. She eases shea butter into her hair, and quickly twists her curls into chunky twists.

“Confused about today?” Mark asks suddenly.

“No.” She can’t be this is her resolute choice, and she’ll stand in it. No matter what it costs her now, Neriah will have her vengeance, and with it, her mother will be satisfied.

“Interesting assessment. The turmoil in your spirit tells me something else.” Mark follows when she exits the bathroom and sits down on her bed.

Neriah sighs, rubbing the back of her neck. “How would you know how my spirit feels?”

“It’s a thing I find I can do.
